Title: Snopocalypse, again ?
Post by: BuyLowSellHigh on February 01, 2011, 04:31:28 AM
Turned on The Weather Channel this morning.  Sounds like doom and gloom abounds and many records will be broken this week (including some for us in coastal SE TX).  They're using words like "mega" and "monster" to describe what Stephanie Abrams is calling "the beast".  Gov of OK has already declared a state of emergency for the entire state, and they're saying it's going to get worse.

If you're in the path of this thing be ready and stay safe.  Have your emergency goodies ready.

I've been through four official blizzards in my life and the aftermath was not much fun - exciting, but not fun.

It has been one heck of a winter. Heck, it's been white here since the first week of December.

Where the heck is Al Gore during all this weather. I heard he was giving a Global Warming Speech in Cancun while spending his spare time walking down the Waikiki Beach!

We're under a Blizzard Warning now.  We had freezing rain last night, and everything is coated in ice right now.   The heavy snow is moving in this afternoon, so I didn't even bother making the 28 mile trek to the office.   Forecast is 8-10" today, high winds, then an overnight total of 14-18" of snow.  Then -20° windchills after that.   I feel for the road crews and the linesmen that have to be out working in that mess.

Well we won't see any blizzards here along the TX Gulf coast, but we are set to get some record breaking weather with this system.  If what's happening on the warm side of the boundary is any indication, then what we've been seeing this morning suggest this system IS a beast.  There is one heck of a gradient across the boundary.

Just had a line go through that made it look like a hurricane outside.  There are Gale warnings up for the entire day along the coast.  Our temps are supposed to drop ~ 45 °F from this morning into tonight with high wind advisory in place and a wind chill forecast of ~ 10 °F in the morning -- temps dropped 21°F in the last hour (from 68 to 47).  We even have sleet and snow in the forecast (60% probability) from Thursday night through Friday morning.

While what we are expected to get is mild by comparison to the heartland, we ain't built for winter weather down here.

I hope folks are taking the forecasts and warnings seriously!

Gotta love it.

Were at 10 F and a -5 F wind chill right now with light snow falling on top of a sheet of ice that came down last night.

Were expecting 3" to 5" of snow with strong winds and a wind chill of -10 to -20 most of the day
and -20 to -30 tonight.

There talkin the heavy stuff is gonna come on Wed.

Watched 5 SUV's wreck in front of me in 4 different locations this morning on the way in.

Four wheel drive dont do ya any good when you drive like an idiot on the ice.

Gotta love it.  ::)

Figures We drove 27 miles to get home in a Blizzard with Whiteout conditions (Like driving in a dense heavy fog) only to damn near get stuck in my own driveway 10 feet from the garage!!  So I did what every normal fella from the Midwest does when its snowing. I opened the garage door, backed down the driveway and got a little more speed!! Slammed on the brakes when I slid into the garage didn't want to hit the beer/meat fridge ya know!! You have to have priorities! ;D

Both I-70 and I-44 are closed in the State of Missouri.  We got about 12 inches on the ground with a 40 mph wind just east of KC.  Stay inside and stay warm.

Dang Pat, nice pictures. How the heck didn't your plastic chairs get blown away?

The main stormed missed us and hit just north of Cincinnati.

Local 12 said this morning that over 20,000 people in the viewing area, Indiana, Kentucky and Ohio, are without electric. I believe the main area was Indiana and north of Cincinnati.

But here nothing but rain, heavy winds, 55 to 60mph, and a lot of trash cans and plastic outdoor furniture. Wind advisory today until 6pm Snow tonight with rapid temperature drop down to around 12degree.

Pat, thanks for the pics, we also missed it this time.  Got quite a bit or rain and wind all night - some limb was hitting the house all night long.  Watched the Flames play the Preds in Nashville last night.  There is something about the Flames on our home ice - the last 6 times each game has gone to OT or SO and we haven't won.

wyoduke - Thats pretty cool about the guy coming out.  Ya'll are the unsung heroes!  I don't see how ya'll do all that during all that inclement weather.  That has to be miserable.  I hope they pay you well.  Everytime the power co around here has people out they put some pretty girl spokesperson on saying that they have guys on the job.  I'd rather have her job rather than yours!   ;D ;D

Well here's an interesting twist - you don't have to be in the blizzard zone to feel the impact ...

Just got an automated message from our City (part of the emergency communication system) - we're getting rolling blackouts.

From an associated news release here's the deal:

"Feb 2 (Reuters) - ERCOT, which operates the power grid in much of Texas, imposed rolling blackouts on Wednesday due to the loss of several power plants overnight during a severe ice storm, a spokeswoman for ERCOT said.

She could not say when the rolling blackouts would end.

The grid operator urged consumers to cut back on their power usage.

Electricity traders said hourly prices in ERCOT were $2,000 per megawatt hour, up from $50 where it usually trades."

They must really think we are gullible.

Al Gore has an explanation for the record snow and cold gripping the nation: global warming. Responding to an on-air question by Bill O'Reilly, Gore wrote on his website the "increased heavy snowfalls are a consequence of man-made global warming."

"As it turns out, the scientific community has been addressing this particular question for some time now and they say that increased heavy snowfalls are completely consistent with what they have been predicting as a consequence of man-made global warming."

Our weatherman out of Houston has said that starting tomorrow around

noon, moisture will move in off the Gulf and with the combined artic temps

BLSH will get ice/sleet/snow. The Houston area will recieve sleet/snow and he

saying my area is to recieve 3 to 4 inches of the white crap. It will only last

until Sat morning as we will warm back up into the mid 40's.

Yeah BLSH and my brother and other relatives will be dealing with what I have been dealing with the past two days...inches of ice.  CRG if you are lucky you get more snow than ice.  It was weird late Monday night we had thunderstorms with freezing rain.  Now that I have never seen.

Yeah, the next two days will be interesting for SE TX.  I think this is the 3rd time in 16 years living down here that I've seen the actual possibility of snow in the official NWS forecast.  Some of the school systems in adjacent areas already have announced closures or early dismissals for tomorrow based on the forecasts.

For our buddies in snow country laughing or scratching their heads, the problem is we aren't built for sustained freezing (exterior and uninsulated overhead water lines) or snow (static loads).  We're built for subtropical temps and tropical weather - heat, humidity, rising water and high winds.  When we got the freak snowstorm on Christmas eve night in 2004 many of those nice outdoor screen enclosures were crumbled and in failing many did structural damage to the roofs of the houses to which they were attached.

Here is the latest from our Local 12 here in the Cincinnati area...

Duke Energy crews have restored power to thousands of homes and businesses in our local area that suddenly found themselves in the dark Tuesday night, thanks to an ice storm.   At the height of the outage, 30,000 customers were without power.  According to the Duke Energy website, as of 5:45 a.m. Thursday, some 2,000 customers in Ohio, Kentucky and Indiana are still without power.

Yeah, seriously..  He could have taken a helicopter from BNA and landed it right on Belle Meade Boulevard, but, noooooooooo...
He had to SHUT DOWN THE ENTIRE TOWN every time he came "home"  (Heck, he grew up in DC).
It's no surprise that he didn't carry Tennessee NOR any of the EIGHT states that touch Tennessee.

Well if the shoe fits, I guess we have to wear it.  There's more truth than fiction in that video than you would imagine.  And yes, I do have my pipes wrapped - actually have four of those hose bib covers in place since Monday. So everyone have a good laugh on us.

But along the SE TX Gulf Cost, this just ain't right - wife's car in our driveway yesterday (Friday) morning (schools and government offices all closed).

According the the NWS we had ~ 0.2" of ice.

DTAggie in Dallas area got hammered by TX standards.  First time they used their snowplows in 12 years.  For those of us ~ 300 miles south what surprised us was that Dallas actually HAD snowplows.
