Ok so i need some tech help. This will be smoker cam ;D
I got a Foscam wireless IP camera Fl8918W
And i'm having a heck of a time with it being wireless. When the ethernet cable is in i can view it fine, Unplugged and NADA.
Help is always good
Mucho Grassyass :D
Heck, I'm no techie but even I can figure this one out. Leave the cable plugged in! :D :D :D
OK, I'll be over here in the corner for a while. :-\
Have you configured it's wireless settings so it can communicate with your wireless router?
Hopefully you have a wireless router? ;)
Do you have WEP security enabled on your wireless router?

Yeah, they won't be able to communicate. Wireless B/G is the most common (and oldest). N is the latest 'high speed' stuff, and apparently yours isn't backwards compatible to the B/G router your router isn't backwards compatible to the B/G level camera.
Ok they should be able to communicate after all.
Let me look up that router real quick.

So if i get a new wireless router which is better B or G
Well, according to Cisco, it should be able to talk to that camera:
QuoteCompatibility: Wireless-N, -B and -G

B and G are the older (and slower) wireless standards. N is the latest and greatest.
It's backwards compatible "Standards 802.11n, 802.11g, 802.11b, 802.3, 802.3u"
Does look compatible http://homedownloads.cisco.com/downloads/others/e1000.pdf let me look at the manual and see what they recommend
EDIT* wow you guys are fast ;D
Did you enter your SSID? as well as your WEP or WPA key

Ok now ya got me all confused :D
SSID is the name or your wireless network, the broadcast name. To connect to your network you have to setup the WEP or WPA keys [if you used security] and the network's name.

Yep use a WEP security key but the cam wont let me add the entire key? Maybe one of the problems

Are you entering it in hexadecimal?

:D :D
HUH :D
Speak sausage to me :D :D
;D
Sorry, are you entering your key as a sequence of numbers, or letters?
N - 78
E - 69
P - 80
A - 65
S - 83
Most of the time it is something really simple I would just start over.
Make sure you have:
a) SSID; Your Network Name
b) Encryption method (e.g., WPA/WPA2/WEP); Be sure of the encryption method you are using on your router
c) Encription technique (e.g., TKIP/AES/TKIP-AES) This will be associated with WPA or WPA2
d) Share key ALL
If you are cutting and pasting your wep/wpa key, sometimes when you do it leaves a blank space, at the end of the key make sure this isn't happening.
You'll geter up! so to speak ;)
Slap me like a dumb@$$ :D
If i want to change my wep key for my router how do i do that. The camera says no symbols only letters numbers.
I musta been sleeping during wireless class :D

OK, back to the corner for me again. :-\

LOL you can log into your router from your PC. Either using an I.P address or maybe your router came with software that let's you login.
On your wep key, there are different strength keys 64 bit 128 bit so make sure which key length you are using for the router. 64 bit is shorter than 128.
*EDIT if you change your wep key you will have to setup all your wireless devices again with the new key!
If your going to do all that then I would change the encryption to WPA/WPA2 waaaaay better security. You don't want little johnny next door hacking your connection for his XBOX ;D
Need a good WPA key here ya go http://www.kurtm.net/wpa-pskgen
I would just look at the router wep key length, then set the cam wep key length to that and try to enter the key again.
All this is greek to me too, but looks like they are gonna get you on the right track, better be prepared to give up a s**tpile of recipes for all this techie info ;D
Rick, open a browser and type 192.168.1.1 in the address bar.
That's usually the router IP address (where you get to the settings so you can change your security key).
You'll need a password to gain access -- hopefully you remember or can guess it...
Oh Mi Goosta :D
This is a major pain in the tokes :D
And if you don't remember what your router login password is there's a tiny little button somewhere on it to reset everything back to the factory defaults. You usually have to press and hold it for at least 5 seconds. You might need a paperclip to reach it. Then just Google the default password for your router or look it up in that manual you remembered to put in a safe place in your drawer. ;)
When you get back to establishing the new security parameters be sure to turn off the 'Broadcast SSID' option. That'll help keep the little buggers from easily hacking your connection.

Thats not the issue i'm having.
The issue is not being able to figure port forwarding and having people watch my smoker on my IP cam as just viewers.
All great advice!
It's just like when you tell us about making sausage, grinder plates/casings/fermenting/drying/ smoking..... ??? a foreign language to me anyway.....but I always learn something from it!
Just go through it all slowly step by step, and you will be good to go ;)
Some tips:
Make sure you change your username/password to your router, do not leave the default name/password
Use wpa if it is available, and use a strong password/phrase longer the better http://www.kurtm.net/wpa-pskgen
Make sure you write all the new passwords and stuff down for future reference
Drink a beer :D
I think I might have this figured out. Hopfully remote smoker cam this week.
