Title: Operation NOLA Recon
Post by: squirtthecat on February 18, 2011, 10:19:50 PM

We can't make the big NOLA smokeout, but we have arrived on an advanced scouting mission.    We've infiltrated the Royal Sonesta 'safe house', and will reconnoiter the surrounding restaurants/bars/museums/sites tomorrow though Monday.

Clandestine spy pics forthcoming!

One of my best friends and his wife are in NOLA for their first time since Katrina.  I'm getting "two-a-day" messages with their restaurant reports.  So far, Cochon is the winner with Upperline right up there.  Palace Cafe got a decent review and I know they went to Emeril's but they didn't comment.

Some of the earlier parades have already started.   This one runs on foot into the Quarter.   KyNola knows the name, I can't spell it off of the top of my head...

Nope, sorry.  The parade was running a couple hours late, so we went and got dinner.  We caught the tail end of it an an intersection down from the restaurant.   It was mostly a foot parade, with just a few donkey pulled parade 'floats'.  Huge crowds out to watch it, though.

Well, I think I know now why Pat didn't post any pics of the Mardi Gras parade.  Seems as though he wanted to be a part of the Mardi Gras parade experience and rented himself a costume!  The doorman at the Sonesta took this pic of Pat returning from the parade and sent it to me.  Thanks Malcolm, I'll give you the $10 in April!

The Quarter is decked out in full Mardi Gras regalia!  Ironically,in the second pic down in the balcony section of your post there is an address of 837 Royal Street.  I have a friend who had an apartment in that building for many years.  Have stayed there many times.  Beautiful courtyard inside complete with a small but very nicely done pool.

That crawfish omelet looks killer along with the bowls of gumbo and the grilled shrimp po boy.

STC - Waiting (more or less patiently) for the text to go with the food porn photos.

Also, you forgot your New Orleans architecture lesson: balconies are unsupported.  If there are supports from the ground or the lower level, it's a "gallery," not a "balcony."

A multi napkin, gravy running down the elbows, roast beef piled high on Liedenhiemer french bread.  It just doesn't get any better than that.

The killer roast beef po boy and the black bean and rice dish came from the Gumbo Shop.  I believe the last 4 pics came from Red Fish Grill as did some of the first food porn pics.

Why do I feel like I need to take two Alka Seltzer, go back to bed, and then sign up for Weight Watchers when I reawaken?

Thanks for the pics Pat.  Living vicariously!

However, I would have brought a rod to go after some of them pretty colored NOLA trout in the 5th pic.

As I've traveled in other countries, I am constantly reminded of the Ugly American Tourist tag by the natives.  Often well deserved.  Case in point - the 8th picture - the Jazz Club.  Some Interior Designer poured her heart out to create a beautiful setting, some owner dropped some really big bucks on the beautiful setting, and some contractor worked and fretted to build that beautiful setting.

Pickled Quail eggs are gooood, richer than chicken eggs.

Its amazing how big the eggs are compaired to the size of a Quail.

Ah, Lucky Dogs!  One of the few meat products too mysterious for even me.  I don't think I've ever known anyone who has ever eaten a Lucky Dog. I can't even remember ever seeing anyone I didn't know eat one. I don't think there are hot dogs in those carts; I think they use them to transport bodies surreptitiously out of the Quarter after a rough night.

Ka Honu, my wife doesn't think she has been in New Orleans unless she has eaten at least one Lucky Dog per trip.  Me, I'm partial to their smoked sausages.

Come back next year with your own Krewe?  How 'if we come down in a couple months with our own Krewe?

Krewe du Smoke! :D

I hear you but I've still never seen it.  Until proven otherwise, I'm sticking with my body removal theory.

Checked with squirtthecat to add some more pics.  He said go.

My wife, Amy, and  headed down for a long Mardi Gras weekend.  Went to several of the places recommended.  A bit touristy yes but fun and tasty.

Did a lunch at Johnny's.  Had the daily special of a half boudin Po' Boy and a bowl of seafood gumbo -

Another lunch at La' Bayou.  Here was a fried green tomatoes with shrimp, pickles and a remoulade sauce -

Yet another lunch was at the Voo Doo that was pictured above.  A pulled pork sandwich -

Did the breakfast thing at Cafe du Monde per requirements of my wife.  The plaque you see is from another forum and is a traveling plaque.  It goes around all the members and gets pics where it goes with a log to track where it's been.  Maybe we need a traveling tongs?

Of course the menu was beignets and cafe au lait -

Dinner one night was at Mother's.  Here it was the Ferdi Po' Boy.  The dredges were the way best part -

Last dinner was at Emeril's.  Last time was Domenico's so we thought about making the rounds.  Started off with anduille and boudin sausage plate served over welted collard greens with caramelized onions and mustard -

Moved on to grilled scallops and shrimp with mustard greens -

Finished off with the house special of banana cream pie -
