Lord help the people where Katrina hits. 160 mph winds and still a fair amount of warm water for her to go over before landfall. Some of the water temp is reported at 90 F. In simple words she could get a lot bigger and stronger. If she stays a Cat 5 the word will not be bad, it will be <b>total and complete distruction.</b> She is so strong now that if for some reason she shifted back toward the panhandle, that due to the shelf there the storm surge would be in excess of 20 feet of water.
In this picture below from this morning you can see the county I live in will just about fit into the eye of this storm. That is huge.

I've been through a Cat 3, and it is one scary Mother. A Cat 5... there just will be nothing left. God help these people.

My wife is echoing the same Olds, when she was young she lived in Corpus Cristi and she rode out a Cat <s>5</s>4 (the storm name exscapes me). Not being through one, she reminds of what is about to happen. Lets all pray for these folks.

Scary as Hell! I lived in Japan where Typhoons would come through occasionally. They pale in comparison to this. My daughter lives in Florida, and it looks like it will pass on Talahassee, but Ma Weather is quite unpredictable at times, and the course might change.
New Orleans is going to be under water if there is an 18 foot crest. There will be people on balconines in the quarter stepping onto boats if it crests that high. Devistation will be significant!

Scary as Hell! you got that right. we all need to say a few prayers for these folks.
Katrina is going to miss us to the East but New Orleans as we know it may not exist again. Pray for those folks as they are predicting a 25' + storm surge with the waves onn top of that. This could be the one they have been fearing for decades
Eightball[8]
Look at this eye and the inner wall, its has got to be close to 80 miles across... if she keeps getting bigger she could very well be the biggest record storm known.
Look around at your house/ home. Look at everything you ever worked for and know that tomarrow at this time it will all be totally gone. This is what is going to happen to thousands of people.

I'm sitting here watching CNN. There are still people walking around downtown New Orleans. Unbelievable.
In my part of the country, the storms we have are usually over with pretty quick. I think this is worse, waiting for the devestation.
We are praying for the people in the path of this storm and will help in anyway that we can.

Just got off the phone with some friends who grew up in Slidell and luckily moved to Tampa. The girl who I talked with, grew up in Slidell, said the house she grew up in is now gone. She was thankful that her brothers made it out ok, and she now has a homeless shelter at her place in Tampa with her inlaws, and some friends that have come to visit for awhile...a long while!
Her folks have finally been able to call her, having left Louisiana when the warning was first issued to evacuate, but not until they were about 2 states away. No cell, no communication....
My boy got a full ride at University of New Orleans, and I did see some pictures ot UNO...at least the sign..much was under water.
Pretty familiar with New Orleans, having spent some Army time at Ft Polk during Viet Nam era, and then visiting my son there during his college years, it is so sad to see this jewel of a city devistated by Katrina.
I sure hope help for the community gets moving. My heart goes out to all of these displaced people!

I heard on the news today that once they stop the water from coming in that it would take 3 to 6 months to pump all of that water back out.
For years I did water restoration work. I can tell you not one wood based building will be able to be saved. The capillary action of the water no matter how many stories a building is tall over that time-line will cause massive mold/ mildrew growth and wood rot.

I've given gallons of blood, but little cash. Their infrastructure is so poor that only half what you give gets to the people who need it. The other half goes to "administrative expenses". The CEO rakes in 7 figures a year.
Right now, I don't care. We're collecting money at work to send the RC. We're taking a vote tomorrow amongst the employees to forego our Christmas party & divert that money to the RC, I'm pretty sure it will happen.
These people need our help.
Just remember, 99% of the needy won't be the attention of the media. They will continue to sensationalize the 1% of the looters & welfare bums that are cashing in at their neighbors' expense.
Lots of good people need our help.

Ya think next time I check into a hotel & they ask "Smoking or Non?" they would mind?
My family (on Dauphin Island, AL) made it through OK so far... Younger brother had his house gutted by wind and water but they're OK.
Still no word from my Aunt and cousin that live across the bay in Daphne.
My thoughts are with you and your family...

Kirk,
You are right about the management of the RC, especially after 911, that was a fiasco. But I just had to do something. You folks really don't know me and where I came from, but it does hurt me (more than you know) to say that "some" and I mean "some, churches & religious organizations may not have all together either. Many want to do well with a pure heart and they run down there with no organization. Right now it's hard to know which has it together, until that emerges I will probably stick with the RC. My heart is still sad for these folks.
