Title: Snack stick question

I can't remember if I've asked this before but I did a quick search and couldn't find anything on it...

I remember back in the 80's I used to see stores in the mall that would carry snack sticks, darker in color than I see mostly here on cure kit boxes or in these forums. They were probably about 4 to 6 feet long and hung over dowels.  I was in North Jersey at the time. They were really good and I haven't had anything like it since. Anyone know what I'm talking about and do you have a recipe for it?
