Title: INTERESTING OBSERVATION
Post by: Jim O on March 25, 2011, 06:23:56 AM
Yesterday I was doing some ribs ( 3-2-1 ) and when pre-heating the oven, couldn't get the temp over 201.mind you it was -8C outside. The smoker was inside the garage and I didn't bother to put the heat on.

After about 45 min at 201,I turned on the SG and the temp went up to my pre-set temp of 220*.

The temp stayed there all during the smoke, but during the foil period ,with no smoke, the temp dropped again and was the same for the "sauceing" period.

I had to crank the temp up to 240 to maintain 220+

I was taking the temp reading from the digital reading on the SG. Didn't use the Maverick.

I disn't realize the SG generated that much heat!

Incidentally,the ribs were great !

yes it can, its an additional 175 watts of heat and with the 500 watt main element you total 675 watts

I believe the SG is 125 watts.  But still, that's 25% added to the main heater.  I always knock off the last burned puck and leave the SG on for the additional heat.
