Title: FTC for butt - size of cooler?
Post by: gbritten_nh on March 26, 2011, 10:29:39 AM
I just discovered my 6-pack size coolers are inaccessible under a snow/ice bank still, so I have to use a bigger ice chest, anybody think this will be an issue?  For my first Butt for pulled pork tomorrow.

I use a 50-quart cooler for FTC.

If you need to hold it a long time (more than 4 hours) pack the empty space with more towels.

IMHU the larger the chest, the faster the butt would lose temp.

I would assume it all about insulation. Drag the cooer into the house so that it is warm and then as FLB said, just pack as many towels, crumple newspaper, the neighbor's cat, whatever will act as an insulator.

Can't catch the neighbor's cat, might use mine  ;)  On second thought, stick to towels.  The butt is coming from the oven so I will bring the cooler in the night before to equilibrate to indoor temp, still cold here, 34 F (+1 C) in midafternoon.

Thanks for everybody's input!

I've used a couple of methods to warm up the cooler.

Place a large pan or pot in the cooler and add boiling water to it.  Close the cooler and let it sit for at least 30 minutes.

Put a heating pad, on high, in the cooler for an hour or so.

Leave the poor cat alone  :o

After further consideration, I will use the microwave, much closer in size.

Good idea! But I still wouldn't use a neighbor's cat with it in the microwave :o.....use a towel instead :D
