Title: VENT MOD
Post by: Jim O on April 16, 2011, 08:08:40 AM
As I always leave the vent wide open,I was thinking of cutting a 4" hole where the vent presently is,and inserting a fluted elbow so I can vent thru a window in the garage in the winter.

Does anyone see any problems with this ?

I've seen pics of others on here who have done that and it seems to work for them.  Some have an in-line fan in the pipe with adjustable fan speed.

My only concern would be having it indoors if you will be doing a long overnight smoke as far as a possible grease fire and no one being awake to notice it.  A remote thermometer such as the Maverick ET-732 with a high temp alarm feature could be set to warn you if the chamber temp gets too high, I suppose.

The way i look at it Bradley made the diameter of the vent for a reason. To open the vent up more might create a loss of heat in the cabinet. Try to leave it alone and put a 4" pipe over it.

My smokehouse is vented 4" but its a larger smoking area.

In the winter just put the OBS in the bathroom below the fart fan...I am sure the wife will not mind :D

I wouldn't cut holes.  Remove the adjustable vent and mount pipe over the exhaust hole.

This is a short straight pipe with a flange and an adjustable elbow.

Mounted on the smoker using four 3/8" sheet metal screws.

Good one, Arnie

Did you make up the pipe with the flange on the bottom?

That fitting doesn't look familiar to me.
