Title: Pulled Pork Calculator?
Post by: wkahler on April 17, 2011, 05:56:21 PM
Is there a half way easy way to figure out how much raw to buy in  order to feed a crowd?  Some reason i thought it was like 3/4 of a pond per person??  I have a request for pulled pork for Easter and wanted to make sure i get enough plus left overs  ;D

Safest way to ensure leftovers is one full butt per person expected...and hope for a few no-shows. :D :D :D :D :D

Sorry for the joking answer, somebody will be by with a serious one soon.

Rule of thumb
Pulled sandwich = 1/4 pound is one sandwich and one serving
Sliced pork = 1/3 pound is one serving.
Butts can lose approximately 40% when cooking.

Me - I use 1/2 lb per person plus 40% for shrinkage. I like leftovers

So if i do 2 6lbs butts for 10-12 people i should be good and have a few leftovers!

you would have 40% shrinkage so the 12 lbs become 7.2 lbs. = about 0.6lbs per person. Should be enough if you have some sides.
