Title: New to smoker building
Post by: cib on April 18, 2011, 04:15:19 PM
Hello everyone. I'm new to smoker building, I've read the forums off and on for a while but finally decided to jump in. I am curious what materials people are using for their smoker builds. I've seen some nice UDS but what are people using for insulation of their smokers.

I'm considering a rectangle build similar to the GOSM but using some steel I have access to, I have no clue what to insulate it with though. I'm a bit concerned about most of the insulation being around the food.

Anyone have any pointers for a new comer?

I have always used Roxul Mineral Wool insulation. It should be available at your local building centre. It is rated at something like 2000 degrees and is used inside powder coat ovens that run much higher temps than a smoker. Around here it's not much more expensive than regular fibreglass insulation. I'm assuming you are lining your smoker with metal inside.

Here is a link to the Roxul site. http://www.roxul.com/home
