I am not sure how many of you watch the Outdoor Channel, but nearly half the shows on there include some kind of recipe corner. They get a chef, or just some poor schmuck, to cook up the "game-o-the-week." On Team Fitzgerald, a rather, uh, unsophisticated show, they were grilling some deer steak (I think), along with all of the vegtables (whole sliced green pepper, badly sliced onion...etc.). The grill had what looked to be a compartment on the left. It was still part of the interior grill surface - it was not like the "smoke box" you see on the larger drum type grills, it was just separated from the grill surface. You could see there was a fire going, and they used chips from their own wood chipper (ok so far), and then he says,
"If you really want to get the smoke going, you toss in some leaves."
AND HE DID! A DOUBLE HANDFULL OF DRIED LEAVES!!
Why hasn't Bradley come out with a leaf bisquette?
Boy o boy...I bet that was a tasty smoke. I have, on occasion, burned large piles of leaves. I have never, ever, thought, "I bet a juicy steak that tasted like leaves would be good!"

What a piece of work is man!

Heh!! I don't think I have ever thought that either!
I posted this on my hunting message boards and one of the members replied - to each his own.
I suppose - hypothetically - you could use a cow puck for smoking if you wanted to, BUT I HAVE NEVER MET THE MAN WHO ENJOYED THE FLAVOR OF A GOOD COW PUCK!!!
Gordo
Hmmm my only question is, can you get those new Cow Pucks in the 120 piece size or are they limited to the 48 piece pack only??
Carpe Diem does NOT mean catch of the day
well you can get the 120 pack, but the shipping stinks!!

All hail the god of smoke
I have used oak leaves in the past. However, if you really what to kick it up then grow a rosemary bush if you can. Take a few branches off of it and now you are talking real grillin'

The only thing worse than burning cow puck, is burnt garlic[:D]
I have used tea leaves and herbs to smoke with using a stove top smoker.

Some of my Mississippi friends replies.
I love a good pine needle and cypress smoked pork loin!
Since I run a woodburner I have to use wood that is seasoned or that smoke taste will bite you back...reckon we could carry a sackful of hickory and pecan leaves to MIM and start a new trend...
The smoking leaves sounds nasty. Green hickory nuts soaked in water and sprinkled over the coals will work though.
Anyone try a gum smoked slab of ribs?
Up here in North Mississippi we like to toss some green cedar limbs into the fire when we smoke stuff on the grill,If thats not handy we cut chunks out of the telephone poles..oh the taste of creosote,if we're too lazy to do that an old milk jug works just fine.
Seriously though,I use alot of pecan wood or apple if I have it,not real fond of mesquite,it gives an overpowering smoke taste,We also use alot of hickory.
I'll try the leaves for when my in laws visit next time, might be worth it.

Sometimes a little urine in the water pan adds a little zing to smoked meats! Ever tried cooking smores over a burning tire?
I can't wait to try the milk jug trick. takes up less space than a tire.
Treated 2X6s does wonders on salmon.
I just had to share!

If you think those were bad, you should have seen the responses to the message board question, "Have you ever peed out of your deer stand?"

About 14 years ago I had a helper who need to pee, and he got it to close to the end of the vacuum hose of a truck-mount carpet cleaning machine. Not just any type of truck-mounted unit. This one had a number 5 blower. How about 500 cubic feet of air per minute (2 inch hose) and 14 inches of mercury (lift!) He was very lucky I was at the door and saw it happen--I broke the union at the cups to release him--or otherwise he would have been at a minumim a tenro the rest of his life. I terminated him.
True Story~~!
