Title: RIBS
Post by: viper125 on July 01, 2011, 06:53:56 PM
Well wife wants ribs for first smoke. So i'm going to try 3-2-1 But not sure of the rub. Like it to be one I can make and adjust. Cant be hot couple coming over dont like hot. But me and the wife does. Looked at recipe site and see Jans and a few pork rubs. Jans seems like a lot of sale a little over a cup. Does this rub leave a real salty taste? Also thought Id add a extra step in the pid for the first step to preheat the smoker before adding ribs. Maybe 25-35 degrees hotter to decrease reheat time after closing door. What do you think. Also whats your favorite homemade rubs for ribs?

Viper, my wife Jan and I developed Jan's Rub and although it has a lot of different salts in it, it doesn't have a heavy salt flavor to it in our opinion.  In fact, you may be surprised at the sweetness of it.  We developed it for poultry and the folks here began to tell us all the other things they were using it with.

As for Bad Byron's Butt Rub, really good stuff.  I'm a big fan of Bad Byron's.

My pleasure Viper.  If you have time, mix the Rub a day before and let it "marry" all the flavors together.  If not don't worry about it.  Besides.....if the ribs don't turn out to your wife's liking, you can blame it all on me! :)

Sorry guys chalk it up to a beginner I guess. Not use to taking pics. Got a couple of the ribs rubbed and ready, and of them in smoker. Didnt get any of the good ones while or after smoking. But its your fault too! You should of reminded me how people get. After smelling them smoke for 2 hrs or more they were slobering and down right dangerous. I took them out and started cutting into 2 ribs pieces. They were disapearing as quick as I cut. Plenty of left over food but not so on ribs. Had to guard my plate lol. Lot of people saying best ever they had. A few small complaints on too much black pepper. Shacks barbeque has about 1/2 a cup if I remember right. Will cut that in half next time. I added a cup of brown suger and it was a lot better. With all the other food we had plenty of leftovers but a very good cook out. I learned a lot this time and Im sure it will only get better.  Thanks everyone for all the help. Best site ever and plenty of good help. Love the OBS and PID!!!!!

Way to go Viper!  Very nicely done.

I have to ask for feedback.  If you used the Jan's Rub, how did you like it?

Yes I did! I let the women taste it before using and they thought it was salty. But after cooking it turned out great. I liked it both ways. I also pulled some ribs out just rubbed. Got to say I like that way better than saused for me.
