Title: BBQ on the River Festival!!
Post by: KyNola on September 01, 2011, 01:38:10 PM
The 17th annual BBQ Fest in Paducah KY "officially" begins 9/22 and goes through 9/24.  42 teams all cooking for 3 days.  There will be numerous other food vendors selling everything you can imagine.  Live music for 3 days and a beer garden.

Want to meet a few members of the forum, eat a ton of BBQ and drink a beer or two?  This would be a great opportunity.  My wife and I will be there, Squirtthecat and his wife will be coming down from Springfield IL along with Hal4UK and his wife.  There is a 4th member who will be attending but I'll let him make the announcement.

Come to Paducah, we'll have a good time.  If you consider coming, let me know and I will get you info on hotels or campgrounds.  Lots of them here.

For more info on the BBQ fest, see here.  www.bbqontheriver.org

So we'll have to take a rain check.

Have fun

Man DMan, I was counting on you to bring the cigars! ;)

Totally understand though.  Have a good trip to Chicago.  Pretty sure our photojournalist named STC will provide enough pics to let folks see what is going on! :)  Well, maybe not everything. :o

Today I received a phone call from the BBQ Fest organizers.  They asked if I would be willing to be part of the whole hog judging team.  I said yes.  It's not a KCBS sanctioned event as it is a 100% charity event so they always have trouble getting enough judges that at least know a little something about BBQ because nearly all of them are already there cooking.  Hung up the phone and contacted STC because there is a possibility that one of the comp teams was going to have STC, Hal and me cook their comp chickens on my MAK because as the comp team leader put it "my guys cant cook chickens for s%#t!"   So I told Pat "Hey Pat, if David still wants us to cook chickens for him I am lateralling the ball to you".  If that other member of the forum shows up, he could get pulled into chicken cooking service as well! ;)

Anyone else have an interest in coming to Paducah?

Pat & Hal, Last year they were all cooking full chickens and then about halfway through the organizers came back and said "oh, you can cook chicken halves if you want" so who knows for sure.

You will have fun. I just judge whole hog at New Holland, PA a couple of weeks agos. They didn't follow MMA rules, but we had to taste the meat from five areas of the hog, and we had to judge six teams.  That is like judging five KCBS pork catagories, or tasting pork from 30 teams.

I have been a KCBS CBJ for three years. We had to judge right after judging the KCBS, but it was worth it. If you have the opportunity you should take it. Whole hog is generally judge last. If the team you volunteered to cook on is not competing in the whole hog catagory, and you are only needed to judge whole hog, you should be able to both cook on a team and also judge the whole hog event.

Thanks for the timing info Habs.  I'll definitely check into that.  Not sure if the team we were going to help out are doing whole hog this year or not.  I do know that in the past they did and won the category.  I'm definitely going to check though!

I called up the Mansion where STC, Hal And KyNola are staying and ask if

they had a room available. Lady said "NO, Sorry all booked up". Then told her

I was a friend of KyNola's. Things changed then. "Hold On. Ok I got you a

room, I Just cancelled someone else out." WOW! Sure pays to know Larry! ;D

Ok, now the real story. Lady said someone had JUST cancelled and I booked the room.

Hey Sonny, ask STC what Mrs. Clark(she owns the place) said to him when he called and reserved his suite, the exact same one he had last year.

I...   Don't remember.   :o

We couldn't have bothered anyone, as the walls are brick and about a foot thick!
Our suite has a front stairwell that spills right out into the BBQ Fest.  Very handy.

Let's try to behave ourselves this year - Not sure if anyone contacted TT to see if he could hold the bond money this year or not.

The Fest "officially" starts next Thursday.  "Officially" being the key word.  Some of the teams will be serving "unofficially" by at least Wednesday.  The location is smack in the heart of Paducah's business district so some of the teams fire it up and start making money for their charity and feeding the folks who work downtown.

This is the very first of many many more to come.
Tomorrow a lot of the teams will roll in and start setting up.

Still plenty of time to make plans to come to Paducah for the 17th annual BBQ on the River!  STC, Hal and CRG are in.  SouthernSmoked is hoping to blow into town on Saturday.  This is a ton of fun for a lot of great charities.

Almost time for me to leave.

I now have two different plans of sneak attack depending

on a phone call I get tomorrow or if I get it. I will either drive to

Tunica, Ms or Nashville, Tn on Wednesday and be in Paducah

midday Thursday. If DTA calls, I will go thru Dallas first.

60,000 pounds of pork and chicken will be sacrificed to the Smoking Gods this weekend in Paducah.  Some weekends they have to place an order for more.

The countdown is on!  Was down at Ground Zero today.  Smokers are everywhere.  Some had started burning wood to get the coals.  Some were just getting there game face on and hanging out.  By now I guarantee the smoke is rolling because it all starts tomorrow for lunch.  Tomorrow is by far the lightest day for foot traffic.  Tomorrow night it will all pick up.  Friday it get sorta busy.  Friday night the best bands play bringing in a big crowd and Saturday is insane.

By tomorrow evening CRG, STC and Hal will all make it to town.  Will know about SouthernSmoked arrival status soon.

Would love for the rest of you to come to Paducah.

Well, that is just the horse trading items..  (and KyNola's 1/2 gal of Tabasco sauce in the box to the right)

The Cambro should be empty by Friday eve, so it can return full of goodies from KyNola's butcher!

I think it's 65.  Shouldn't be 55.  Mark, you got a place to stay?

Never mind.  I know where you're staying. ;)

The only thing I'm bringing is Jan and beer.  Sorry guys.

Also, the radical change on Facebook has also apprently had a dramatic change on my Photobucket account.  Is totally locked up.  Can no longer just sign in.  Have to choose "Sign me up" and then sign in from there.  Can't edit my individual pics and the ads are almost in the middle of the screen.

I can tell that it is directly related to the Facebook change by some of the things I am seeing on the screen. >:(

I'm guessing he's got more than one "reserved" bar stool in the area.

All settled in finally and have laptop + internet working.  (and coffee brewed)

Not much in the way of BBQ last night...  50s and raining - HARD.   Crowds were very light.  Had some cold beers and a hot meatloaf sandwich (thanks Larry!) instead.  I talked to Mark around 11:15 last night, and he had pulled over and found a place to crash for the night.  He was still every bit of 140 miles away and sounded dead to the world.

Sun is out today and the birds are singing...     Should shape up to be a great weekend.

I'll probably create a new thread for pictures.

It's been one of those weekend so far...

First I had to meet a customer in Covington, KY around 3:30pm on Thursday...
bad planning on my part, customer was late and after the meeting it took me over 2 hours to
get home due to Barack Obama speaking in downtown Cincinnati.

As I was driving on 75 and before passing my home exit the wife called and said she wanted to
go with me now. So I drove by the house unpacked the truck into her car and off we went.

Next we stopped by a Shell Gas station to fill up before heading to Paducah. Earlier in the day I'd purchased a Shell gift
card at Kroger's so my wife could get double point for me purchasing this card. Back to the Gas now...
The card didn't work so I went inside to see the cashier. They informed me their system was being updated so I paid with my credit card and
off I went.

So I jumped back up on I75 heading south to I71 and wouldn't you know it the traffic is backed up for miles due to construction on I71 - Down to one lane for 12 miles.
Well 2+ hours after leaving home and now on I71 towards Louisville, KY my wife said that she was hungry. Good Thing!!!

Stopped at McDonald's and it was at that time I realized that I left my wallet back at the Gas station in Florence, Ky (53 miles away)
Turned around and headed back to retrieve my wallet.

Hauled some serious butt back to the station and off again we went.

Made it to Leitchfield, KY that night and while talking to Sonny on the phone I was done for the night.
Got a motel room and spent the night.

Well we hit the bed and about 20 minutes into a sleep my cell rings :o and it's Pat - after talking to him for a few minutes
I went back to sleep. Ring-ring...it's Sonny 10 minutes later.  :o

Finally a little rest and we load up the car --- now the wifey has lost her cell phone... what next.

Well I'll tell ya'...................

I had a great time with some great, great people.
I meet Sonny, Pat, Larry and Hal...the latter three also had brought their wives.

Love these guys!

My wife and I had to leave on the same day as arrival due to a friend of ours competing at Owensboro, KY - Grillin & Chillin BBQ
We left there and drove for about 3 hours and once we arrived I dropped Cathy, my wife, off at the Marriott in Owensboro and drove to the camp grounds.
Tom was beside himself when I arrived, hopefully not at me, but it was now raining cats and dogs and Tom didn't get his spot and we were standing in about 2-3" of water the whole night.

That was it for Tom, by 3am he had loaded up and left the camp grounds. Should have been 43 teams for the comp and 3 teams left.

Drove back to pick my wife up and we were going to go back to Paducah and surprise everyone. Heading down 431 to Central City "Ring-ring...it's the motel that we stayed
on Thursday night and they found my wife's phone. We then drove back and picked it up and headed home.

What a weekend so far.............................
