Title: Man what a night!
Post by: OU812 on November 02, 2011, 09:44:05 AM
I was on my way home lastnight after a very productive day at work about the time I turn off the highway I get this phone call.

It was from a friend of mine who had this sound to his voice like some thing wasnt just right.

He said you close to home?

I said just hittin the gravel.

"You better hurry."

"Watz up?"

"Your dog just got hit."

Now my heart just about jumped outta my chest and I floored it.

"Which one?"

"Your brindle."

By now I was drifting the corners and there was no use of the breaks.

"How is she?"

As he was tellin me I could here her yelping un-controlably.

"I cant get close enough to see she wants to bite me every time I get close."

About that time I loose signal on my phone and go even faster.

When I get to my drive there in the middle of the road was his truck with the flashers on and off in the ditch was my wife and JD

First thing outta his mouth was I didnt hit her, I was behind //// and the JD just ran right in font of him. //// slammed on his breaks but it was to late.

//// did stop and get my wife and kept tellin her how sorry he was, over and over and over.

//// is a good man. (I tried to call him last night to tell him every thing will be allright but it was late when we got home)

I get to JD and she was in shock along with my wife. I tried to calm them down but JD was the only one responding, the wife was still in shock.

I get JD gathered up and in my trunk and tell the wife to get the vets number. As I'm turning around I see a puddle from were my truck was sitting and I can smell antifreeze.

CRAP! I blew a seal!

Now I'm trying to get JD in the firebird and the wife comes out with the number.

I called the vet and told her to drive as I was holding JD.

Met the vet in town and got JD in the ER. He doped her up and checked her out.

She had 2 cuts that required stitches, a bunch of road rash, got that all taken care of and then off to the EX Ray.

The EX Ray showed she has 3 fractures in her pelvic bone, her hip socket is pushed forward and the rear part of her birth canale is pushed backwards.

The vet said this wouldnt be good if she was a male as the pelvic bone of a female is designed to move some.

This should heal itself and come back together in about six weeks but dont expect to bread her.

He sent us home with some pain killers and a big ol bill.

She and I didnt sleep much last night, I stayed home today to take care of JD and fix my truck.

JD wants to keep gettin up but every time she does she yelps and I go calm her down.

Have to keep her confined and away from the other dogs for 6 to 8 weeks.

Needless to say the other dogs can feel her pain. Its amazing how dogs think like this.

I could go on but I have rambled enough

Same thing happened to a friend of mine.  She did heal up after a couple months.   They had to do some minor surgery, (knee, I think) - but she lived a long, full life after that.    It's amazing how resilient animals can be.

The hard part will be keeping her (and you) calm and still.

Thats exactly what I thought we were going to have to do when the vet called me into another room to discuss what the options were.

There was 3 options  1 as you stated another was a 3 hr drive to a surgeon and the last was seeing she is so young, she just turned 1, and that she is a femail the muscles should bring the bones back together.

I just fed and watered her, she hasn't ate sense 7:00 PM Mon. night.

Wow, you did have a hell of a night.  It's great she is alive and great she is eating and drinking fluids.  I am sure the vet told you to watch and see that she has bladder and BM's.  With injuries to the pelvis, this is sometimes a problem.  Hang in there, it will get better.

OU812 So very sorry to hear. I have lost two over the past 6 years. But never to a vehicular accident. Ours have always been spoiled and just like our children. These two poodles we have now I have spent so much time with since being sick it would probably close to kill me. I am praying for a quick recovery and some strength for you. Got to be some broken hearts there.

Dang Curt that really sucks but she is in good shape and young enough she should be back to normal before long. Good luck with that 6-8 week thing especially when she starts feeling better about 4 weeks into it.

Really sorry to hear this. Hope everything comes out alright for you. I don't have any dogs, we have 3 indoor cats that were strays, and one outdoor cat. I get real uptight  and worried when the outdoor one doesn't come around at for feeding time.

Oh man, Curt I am very sorry to hear this.  I hope she gets well soon.  I went through the same thing with Cassius when he was 1 1/2.  We were at the softball field and he was chasing a ball.  A Ford Ranger came around the corner of the parking lot and as I stepped out to stop the truck she swerved right as Cassius was coming back. Luckily she was only doing about 15mph.  She hit Cassius and stopped but had his leg pinned under her left front tire.  I was actually trying to lift the truck (adrenalline) because she couldn't get the stick shift truck in reverse.  Cassius bit my hand (the only time in his life that he bit me)  Once she got the truck in reverse (maybe 15 sec. but at the time seemed like forever) Cassius walked a few feet and it didn't look like anything was broken.  I picked him up put him in the back of my Expedition and m friend drove us to the Vet.  That is when I saw the big cut on his back leg and could see bone.  The ER Vet got him stable, put an IV in, took x-rays (negative) and bandaged him up so I could get him home for the night and take him to my vet in the morning.  I laid next to his cage all nite. (I never slept)  The next morning he went to the vet and got over 100 stitches.  There was one part on his foot that couldn't be stitched because there was just no skin there.  After about 4 or 5 weeks of changing bandages Cassius was just fine.  No ligament damage and no arthritis later in his life.  A funny thing about the bite mark on my hand, it did not finish healing until Cassius was all healed up?!?!?!?

Anyway my point is the the vet said that the he should heal just fine because of his age.  So I just hope that the same is true for JD.  I know your going through a rough time right now, but I know your are doing everthing you can to make her comfortable and JD knows it to.  She will be ready to run around and play way before you are comfortable letting her.

Real sorry to hear about the puppy when we spoke this afternoon.  Not much I can say Curt other than keep giving her good care.  The young ones, human or otherwise, are pretty resilient.  She'll come back.

BTW, love the hair!

Update!

JD went number 2 today!

Still gotta hold her up,,,,,,,,,,,,,I think shes embarrassed by the way she looks at me.  ::)

Thats another good sign.

I think I might be able to sleep all night tonight.  ;D

Gave her a bone and I think she forgot all about the bad things cause she was goin to town on that bone,,,,,,,,,,,,,big time.

You can see the swelling in her left leg and the right has some swelling around the ankle.

I talked to //// today and he still keeps sayin how sorry he is and I keep tellin him it will be allright.

He said he didnt hit her he ran over her and feels really bad,,,,he tried every thing he could do not to hit her but it happened so fast.

By the way he drives a F250 diesel and it was his front tire that ran over her

We talked for a wile and he kept sayin how sorry he was.

I keep callin him //// cause I dont want to say his name,,,,,,,he is a good man.

Anyhow just layin around with my baby and keepin her from gettin up,,,,,she still wants to play with Leo and Leo just lays by her side.

Kinda cool.

Nice talikn with ya Matt,,,,,,,,,,,hope to do it again.
