welcome aboard, lots of good people and  information, please ask  as some will chime in  with what they  have  done as well as  giving good advice.

there  will be variations on how to smoke an  item... you   need to  find what  works for you.

Also pick up  a maverick et 732 dual probe  wireless thermometer, you  will be happy you  did.

Smoken Smokey.  Thanks to all of you for your welcome to the website. I have the Btadley four rack digital smoker sitting in front of me. Its still in the box. I have read SEVERAL reviews on this smoker, and wonder if I should even open it or take it back. I don't know if this smoker is a newer verson with a good heating element ???. I need a push to open it and get started....

Open the box. The chances of you having one of the bad elements is
Slim to none. Hopefully, your not on the slim side :D. I've had mine for a
Couple of years with no problems.

I just seasoned my smoker. Are the used briquettes supposed to be burned to ashes or still burned, and remain in their original shape.

They will be generally in their original shape only blackened.  Should be blackened all the way through with maybe some ash on them.
