Title: Advice Needed
Post by: NePaSmoKer on November 29, 2011, 02:08:52 PM
Many of you know the properties of certain metals and coatings, So i need some of your expert advice.

I ran out of hog rings for my casing ends. BPS is also out of them until?

I did find 3/8" hog rings at Tractor Supply. 100 of them for like $3.00. The only thing that concerns me is they are copper plated.

Do you think these would be good or bad?

Waiting to see what y'all think before i go get em.

Thanks

Wouldn't think copper would leach into meat or any thing. I'd try them. Isn't the regular ones just steel?

A lot of cookware is made of copper such as copper kettles for kettle corn. The rings wont be actually touching the meat and if you take them off before freezing I would say they would be fine.

If you do a search on copper and food safety it would take a lot of copper to do you any harm. The worst case would be using it in pickling so they say.

We made apple butter in a big old copper kettle for years and that kettle has been in our family well over a hundred years..
