Title: Venting thru wall
Post by: chiroken on December 11, 2011, 02:09:33 PM
Figured this was a new topic...

Who's venting their smoker thru a wall? How many are venting thru an exterior garage wall? Is the simplest way to just run it up dryer flex and then out a standard dryer exhaust to the outside? I'm currently building a garage addition and the siding is going on, wondering if I could put a dryer vent up at about 7 feet so that the bradley can sit on the work bench and exhaust out? Up off the ground makes it easier to set up a cold box for summer cheese smokes (another thing to build still).

I haven't done it myself.  But, I've heard that a bunch of greasy, smokey glop will run down the wall below vent.

That would be a good reason to use glued up PVC. You could even put a tee with a cap so anything running down the inside would collect to be cleaned occasionally.

Yes thats how mine will be when done. I have heard horror stories of syrupy stuff dripping on the meat or even soot. so I figured a t- trap would be cheap insurance. Hard to do using dryer venting pipe.

Ha Ha no! I've seen that photo before. Bad situation. No this is detached and insured. But I take a lot of per-cations too! I don't sleep and smoke any thing that will fire up. I monitor my maverick for abnormally high temps. 15 degrees over cooking temp with alarms. I can normally see my smoker. 2 fire extinguishers I have seen grease fires before not pretty. I am also separating the Smoke generator from smoker to remove fire out of smoker. I believe it's the pucks not the element so much that causes the fires..

I roll my smoker over to a sliding window in the garage, then use a 6' length of pipe, attached to a 90 degree elbow, that slips over a piece I mounted over the vent hole.I then run the pipe out the window, through a piece of plywood that I cut a 5" hole in,to take the pipe.I put the plywood in the horizontal sliding window, and slide the window shut on the ply. If it's too windy out,I put another 90 degree elbow over the pipe that's outside,to block the wind.

Works like a charm for me!

I like it Jim! No permanent holes in the wall and sounds simple. Thanks.

My garage had a reznoir heater in it originally and there already was a pipe going thru the roof and had a weather cap on it. I simply shoved the PVC up the pipe. There is about a 1" gap all the way around the PVC. Still it drafts great with no smoke coming back in.  Smoke like water will take the path of least resistance. But the more bends you put in your draft the harder it is.
