Title: Newbie
Post by: rj3494 on December 25, 2011, 11:11:59 AM
Santa brought me the original Bradley smoker even though I wanted the digital model.  Thought being able to control temperature and time would be important. Reading sounds like digital model has some issues as well.  Should I keep my original smoker and get an aubergins pid or exchange for digital model.  Thanks

Welcome RJ, starting my third year today on my OBS.  Love it.  I have no problems controlling temps with my OBS and no PID.  In fact did 5 lbs of sticks yesterday and started at 110* for an hour, then 130*, then 140*, then 150* then 160* until finish 8 hours later.  It will take a few smokes to get used to it.

That being said, if you really wanted the digital, go get it!

My opinion,  I bought the digital and the auberins pid. If I had to do it again would buy obs and auberins. No need for the digital if you use the auberins.

Your Bradley is like every other tool in your cooking arsenal. You have to use it and get to know it. Find out what makes it work the best for you. Then you can start venturing out and trying different things. That's the best part about this hobby/obsession of ours. We have to keep doing it to get better at it and to make the food better the next time we cook it.

Welcome Aboard

Got my obs last year for Christmas. The only modification I have done is bought a suncast plastic cabinet to put it in.  I love the smoker. I see no reason to do anything to the unit. Smoked a turkey yesterday and it was everybody's favorite thing on the menu.  I think people are fooled by the door temp dial. Only time its accurate is when the things empty.  I lay a second digital temp probe on the rack next to whatever I'm smoking. Door gauge was rock steady at 205.  Digital unit on the rack was rock steady at 244. Smoked the turkey (bone in breast) in a foil pan it was moist and juicy.  Take your time and be patient Santa brought you a great smoker.

If I did it again it would be a OBS and a pid.

Thanks for all your responses.  Decided to keep the smoker and see what happens.  Let the games begin!

I received the OBS as a gift last spring. The Auber was a great addition, and i never knew it existed until I came onto this forum.
I'm really happy with the set up!
