Title: Prime rib rub
Post by: watchdog56 on December 25, 2011, 11:18:55 AM
I have done prime ribs before using Jan's rub and they come out good.
Thought I would try a prime rib using a salt, black pepper and maybe garlic powder mixture.
Has anyone done this before? If so how much of each did you use?

I will be smoking/cooking a prime rib roast this evening with my own type of seasoning:
1tbs bl pepper
1tbs garlic salt
1/2tsp smoked paprika
1/4 tsp onion powder
1/4 tsp rosemary
1/4 tsp thyme
mix  well in 1/3 C OO and rub down roast generously before placing in the smoker.  Works good for me.

Years ago salt, pepper, garlic, and MSG. Was my standard House spice mix. Used it for rubs also by adding Brown sugar.

My now favorite for a while is Jan's Rub. Don't get me wrong I enjoy others, But Jans is my go to rub!

Salt Lick' rub clone
-1-1/3-1/3 portions of salt/pepper/cayenne/garlic powder.
(1/3 part garlic powder is roughly the same as 2/3rds part granulated garlic)

Got one ready to come out of the fridge this afternoon after an overnight stay rubbed with a paste of fresh garlic, rosemary and thyme mixed with salt & pepper in olive oil.  Life rarely (or maybe medium rarely) gets better.

I am not a big rosemary fan, Does it have much power?

I think fresh rosemary adds a nice taste and it's definitely "discernible" so I guess it has some "power."
