Title: 3rd try finding tri tip
Post by: bigmikey on February 02, 2012, 05:49:00 PM
It's shaped like a 7, is this a real tri tip? The other 2 I bought ended up not being the real thing but were very tasty.

That looks like a (slightly too expensive but authentic) tri-tip.  Basic (classic Santa Maria) recipe is rub with one part salt, two parts each of pepper and granulated garlic, red oak smoke to about 140o IT.  Then rest and slice thinly across the grain.  It ain't rocket science but it's delicious.

Thanks guys. Can't remember who said to look for a 7, but I've looked at many stores and finally came across this at Walmart. Looking forward to cooking this for the superbowl.

Smoke/cook to your degree of doneness and then slice against the grain.  The hunt will have all been worth it. :)
