Title: Pigskin into dog treats?
Post by: FLBentRider on February 09, 2012, 06:46:20 PM
I saved the skin from the last batch of bacon I made.

Does anyone have a recipe/method to make dog treats out of pig skin?

I removed the skin after I cured and smoked the bacon, so it is "full cooked", not that the dogs care.

When I make bacon, I remove the skin prior to curing, but save them. If I have available space in the smoker, I place the skins on a separate rack(s), fat side down, and smoke them with the bacon. When the bacon is done, I keep the skins in the smoker, increase the temperature and continue to cook until all the fat is rendered out, and the skins loose a lot of moisture. After removing from the smoker, I blot them dry with paper towels. They become tougher than thick shoe leather. I cut them up in strips to use to season soups, stew etc.

So in your case, I would place them in the 180 - 200°F oven or smoker, fat side down to render out the fat. I believe you have a dehydrator, so after the fat has been rendered, I would dehydrate them for a while.
