Title: Cherry wood
Post by: Keymaster on March 30, 2012, 10:18:07 AM
We lost about 30 ornamental cherry trees at one of the schools in the last ice storm. One of the grounds keepers saved a bunch of the wood and offered me some  for smoking. He said someone told him if it is used for smoking it has to be from a fruit baring tree. Anyone know if this is true, he said it smells like cherrys :)

Oh yeah, it'll be good.  Chunk it up and let it dry out real good first.

As others have stated cherry wood is alright. It doesn't have to be just from fruit bearing trees. Almost any hard would can be use for smoking; which includes fruit & nut bearing, maple, birch etc. Though I have been told to avoid wood from orchard growers (unless you know they are certified organic growers), because of the pesticides that are use.

Be a shame to burn it all, that wood would make a wood turner a happy man...
