I have a 4.5lb Pork Shoulder, what wood to smoke with? what rub? how long in the smoker?
this is my 1st attempt so would be glad of any advice you can give. :D
Any thing goes with pork! But pork shoulder or butt I usually go Hickory! It's my go to smoke.

Most people seem to apply smoke for the first 3-4 hours. I cook mine at 220*F until an internal temp of 195*F. Figure on about 1.5 hours per lb.
I do 225 till 200 or until you can spin a fork in it with ease. I also prefer 3-4 hours of smoke applied after the first hour.
I do 225* till 195* applying 4 hrs of smoke. The mesquite or hickory for me. Plan on 1.5 hrs per lb. start earlier than you think. You can always FTC. Good luck.

Temps and smoke times are spot on for mine however I've used the Special Blend and Cherry with good results.
Don
I generally use pecan for pork, but apple works well.
I think everyone's got you covered as far as cooking times. As far as smoke, I go 4hrs with hickory. Good luck and post pics!
Normally I do every thing in Hickory and just change smoking times. I play with the rest at the request of wife.

I second that. I use apple with the pork collars.
Rub, usually a simple 6, 5, 4, 3, 2, 1 rub. Four hours of smoke, then as said above, 225 till the temp hits 195.
The Jan's rub recipe sounds good so will try that at weekend!
