Fired up the weber kettle grill just like I always do for dinner last night. Shut everything down went inside for the evening. Got up this morning went to let the dog out. Light smoke haze in the back yard. Wonder who would be running a smoker or burning something at 6am? I look down and HOLY S*&^% My F*&^(*&(ing Deck is smoldering!!! Quick ran and got the hose and soaked the crap out of everything. How this old dried out deck didn't go up in flames is beyond me. 3 Boards and 5 stringers burnt and will need to be replaced and repaired. The burn area is about 8 feet long. This was on the old part of the deck where everyone was sitting during the MWSO. We got damn lucky since there has been 15-20 MPH winds blowing all night long and all morning long.
The first two pics are right after I got done hosing everything down.

Later in the day to show the insurance man. Tried to show how the stringers burnt. Must have been the pressure treated lumber that was used when they built the deck. that kept it smoldering and not bursting into flames.

Somebody was watching over my family and I last night!!
Holy crap Chris :o
Glad nothing really bad happened!!!
I assume that embers must have fell through the bottom of the kettle causing the fire?
HOLLY CRAP!!
That was a close one there buddy.
I bet when ya seen that first thing in the morn it really woke you up.
Thats really gonna suck to crawl under there to fix.
Thank God it wasn't any worse. When dealing with your Insurance Co.'s adjuster-if he or she offers you a depreciated settlement-dicker with them. If you have replacement cost guarntee-you should have no worries other than your deductible. Best of luck to ya.
Dang Chris. You is one lucky person for sure. Sure glad that no more damage was done.
Glad you still got one good wing to flap that fire out ;) Seriously glad you and your family are safe!!!
Chris - so glad that had the ending it did. Scary stuff.
Good thing I wasn't still sitting there...would have had a hot foot or tail-feathers.
Glad it wasn't any more damage than that.
Dam!! Sorry to see that happens. Glad everything else is ok.

DAYUM!
Yikes!! :o
yikes
Oooohh S*&^%!
You guys were lucky for sure! Damn!
Wowzers.
Wow, that could have been real bad. Happy that was all the damage. Hope you have working smoke detectors in the house. Being a firefighter I know how quickly it could have gone from smouldering to a working fire and the smoke detectors would give you a warning if it would ever occur again.
The good lord was watching you partner, that was to close for comfort...
If you don't clean out the ash tray on a weber, the small hot coals can exit the grill and roll down the ash pile and onto your deck. Get one of the nonflammable mats to put under the weber and keep the ash tray clean. Glad it wasn't worse.
Been years since I cooked on a Weber Charcoal, but I put in one of those ugly galvanized oil drip pans. Not pretty but effective. I had a redwood deck that was drier than a popcorn fart, and was paranoid about a deck burn.
Sorry to see the damage to the deck Chris,
Thank God that you and yours are okay.
YOW! That was WAY too close Chris. Glad all you had to write about was a charred deck my friend.
Holy crap Chris! :o
I am so happy to hear how lucky you and your family were last night. A few pieces of lumber are nothing.
Man! that's a close one to say the least.
Mike
Glad it worked out so well. Seems you owe a little extra thanks in your prayers tonight.
Sorry for your lost, but as long as every one is ok that what counts!!!!!!!.
Yes thank god everyone is ok.
Deck replaceable, people not.
Time to call the concrete man ;D
Holy shipoop. Thank god you are all ok. We just had a a million dollar home that was inspired by Lloyd Wrights "Falling Water" home go up in flames because of their gas grill. All were fine but the house was a loss. Glad you folks are fine Chris.
WOW!! I'm glad it worked out the way it did.
Was you still spraying water when someone walked up and shook you saying "it's dead man, stop all ready!" ;D
Just glad you are all safe 10.5, a close call!
Well Chris, nice to know it wasn't more serious andyou guys are all OK!! You definitely must be living right and thank god for that. Tim
Wow... crazy stuff. I have my charcoal grill on concrete, but my BDS is on my cedar deck. I'm always paranoid about overnight smokes for that reason.
Glad it wasn't any worse.
HOLY CRAP.
Sure am glad for you that it stayed where it did.
