Title: Venting OBS Outside From Garage
Post by: Panthur on September 22, 2012, 07:33:54 AM
Hi guys....anyone know some options or links on a good way to vent my OBS from my garage for winter smoking projects please ?
I could incorporate a nearby window or I could get someone to come cut me a hole in the wall and do it that way I guess too.
Any help is greatly appreciated, thanks.

i know people have vented through the  wall as well as window in the garage with some ducting,,, im sure others will be along .. some even use a vent hood  like the ones used over a  stove in the kitchen

I have heard of using a kitchen vent hood as well....would that work better or would a bathroom exhaust fan be better ? ( it would likely be noisier for sure, lol ).

I have my BDS on a cart that I roll to the garage window, and vent outside with a 90 deg elbow and some flex aluminium dryer vent . Works for me !

If you do use a fan of some type make sure it is not mounted too low or is too powerful or it will suck the heat right out of the smoker.

I suspect if I am venting to a window I will still need an exhaust fan in the circuit no ?

if the window is  right above the smoker and vent pipe is sealed at the smoker then no,,,, if there is a gap between the smoker top vent and the vent pipe i would recomend it

Mine is vented with an inline fan through (i removed the window and replaced it by a plxyglass with a hole to pass the aluminium pipe) the window with a speed controller. Here is the type of fan and the speed controller that i use for exhausting the smoke out. My fan is 4inches and 165 cfm. Also to sit on the smoker, i use a duct reducer 4x6. http://www.ebay.ca/itm/4-6-8-10-12-inch-Inline-Duct-Fan-Exhaust-Blower-Vent-Speed-Controller-/271029999231?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_2&var=&hash=item84bcefe5fe

Here's my set up.  This is in a small room in my garage and is vented to the outside under the eave.

It does not evacuate ALL the smoke but does a pretty good job.  I would be a bit cautious about doing long, overnight smokes...  The risk of the Bradley catching on fire is slim, but be careful...  I do almost exclusively salmon, which has almost no grease.  An overnight smoke of a couple of port butts that creates a lot of grease drippings may raise the risk of a grease fire.  Just be smart about what you smoke and when.

Good luck with your project!

It's your house (and kids/whatever)...
Someone will slap me down for even mentioning the possibility of "what could go wrong?"
But, whatever.
Take a good look, and proceed as you see fit.
Awrighten.

Some great options guys, thanks. I don't do any overnight smokes even with my OBS on the deck during summer. All my smokes are pretty well supervised. My garage is heated so at the moment I just open the window and the big door part ways as required. It keeps the smoke to a general minimum but certainly isn't the answer for retaining heat in the garage. ( Pretty chilly in Saskatchewan from November to March,  LOL.   :-X

Hi Panthur

Were abouts are you in SK?

I'm in Moose Jaw. I have 2 smokers built into my heated garage. There certainly are precautionary measures to take to alleviate the risk of fire.

I am in Estevan... I guess we are only 2 1/2 hrs away. Small world, LOL. If you got any pics of your garage set up that would be cool. Yeah, I dont do any hi-tech smoking in garage....I check the smoker every 15 mins or so. I also use the Maverick probe ( ET-732 ,I think it is )with remote and can monitor temps from living room.    ;D

Yup, about 2.5 hours away. If you are ever in Moose Jaw let me know if you want to stop by and have a look.

Here's a picture of them in my detached heated garage.

Vented mine by cutting a whole in the roof and put a flange and 3-4 inch pvc through it. Only one problem. I have to open my door once in a while to get a smell in the garage. Totally no smell other wise.

No way! hal4uk. I'm glad you remind people. It just tells me to always keep them clean and always watch them. Butt  as always i'll remind every one also. This can happen with  about any cooking appliance even your kitchen stove. They have Bradley s inside in quite a few smoking restaurants also. Many house fires are started by stoves and ovens. I also believe it's a different story as i do it. My garage is unattached and a way from the house. So no danger of human life's involved.

Awesome looking set ups guys. I am still an amature smoker but am getting into it more and more ( especially when I get free time to experiment ). Mostly I smoke various snack stix varieties and the occasional ribs, chicken or prime rib. I make sausage pretty often but don't smoke it as often as I should ) .  Damn work....taking up all my time....ha ha.
Thanks for all the help everyone. Will keep in touch.
