Title: Different V Trays
Post by: JZ on October 14, 2012, 11:58:29 AM
So I am putting away the smokers this morning after a fish smoke yesterday and the cleanup today and I notice the V trays in the DBS and the OBS are very different.

The one on the right is from the DBS and has much bigger vent openings and more of them. Plus the DBS tray has a larger drip hole in the middle. The OBS is several years older than the DBS and I am guessing the DBS tray is the new improved version. :)

I guess over time things evolve for the better!

You must have purchased the OBS much earlier, or the OBS was in stock for awhile before it was purchased from you. I believe about 5 years ago Bradley redesigned the V trays in both the original and digital models to improve the heat flow. I have an older Bradley so my V tray looks like the one the left.

I can imagine how much more heat can flow through those large openings, especially with more of them. I might try opening up the ones on the OBS to see if that helps with the heat flow. I have dual fans in it and think I will get better heat distribution throughout the smoker if I can get more heat to flow from under the pan (or through it). Worth a try since it is so simple to do. :)

Many of us did widen the vents to obtain better heat, prior to the new V trays coming out. I believe that may have given Bradley the idea to redesign the V tray. I used a tire iron and carefully pried the vents open a little further by twisting the bar, but be careful not to widen them too far.

Do they make the modified tray for replacing the one in my 12 year old OBS?

I imagine if you order one it would be of the new design.  My two-year-old OBS came with the newer V-tray.

It's one of the few modifications I've done that I didn't have any problems with.  :)  ;D

Pat;

The newer designed trays will fit the older models.
