Last Friday we got a call from Jan's 85 year old Mom that Jan's 88 year old Dad wasn't doing well. We jumped in the car, made the 20 minute drive to find that he was extremely weak and couldn't get his breath. He suffers from asbestosis in his lungs and also has congestive heart failure. We take him to the doctor and then admit him to one of the hospitals in Paducah. His heat rate was 31 beats a minute, also known as bradycardia. They decided he would need a pacemaker and would put it in on Monday. Saturday night his heart rate dropped to 20 beats a minute yet he was still completely coherent. Sunday morning they opted to put a temp pacemaker in and he immediately felt better. Monday they installed the permanent pacemaker. While he feels better he is still sick from congestive heart failure, asbestosis, and some kidney issues. Tonight, his general practitioner hit him right between the eyes with "you need to go to assisted living.....now". Jan's Dad simply wasn't prepared to hear that and it was tough on him as he has always been a strong proud man. it was doubly tough on Jan to see her father's reaction. Tomorrow starts my visitation to the various facilities around us once I get him home.
Just wanted you guys to know why I haven't been on here much lately.

That had to be a stressful week, and I'm sure there is still a lot of stress for you and your family. I hope your father in-law gets back to relatively good heath soon. There are many good assisted living facilities out there. One of the most important things is to get one close by so that relatives can make frequent visits.

Sorry to hear about your wife's father. My dad has alzheimer's and heart issues and he has been in a facility for a couple of years now. There are some good places out there.
We went through that with my Step FIL.

From the way I read your post it seems there is some good news in all of this. You got your FIL to the doctor and into the hospital in a timely fashion and his health has improved because of that. Something to be proud of and thankful for.

Our thanks to all of you for your kind words. We were able to get him discharged from the hospital last evening and took him home. Seems to be doing OK. At some point the the adventure of finding an assisted living facility that will meet their approval and then the task of moving them will begin.
It's a lot of work and very tiring, both physically and emotionally but that's ok. When Jan and I first married, her parents did more for us than most in-laws would ever dream of doing so now it's our turn to take care of them.

Larry and Jan, I am sorry to hear this news. It is so very hard to have to break this news to your loved one. 3 weeks ago my 88 year old father was hospitalized and the doctors told us that he would not be allowed to go back home and would have to go into a home. This was so very hard on us as he was a very proud man. 2 days later while he was still in the hospital he died in his sleep. Believe me I do understand what you are dealing with and I will pray for your family.
