Excited to get started with my smoker...wanting to know if I should be able to turn off the smoke and continue with the heat?

YES

That is what the Bradley is, a smoker then after the smoke, its just an easy bake oven  ;D

I had shut down the smoke generator, and the heating element inside the smoker went out as well...any suggestions?

If you have the OBS the smoke generator also controls the heating element of the smoker

You have to keep the generator on, just push off the spent puck and cook away

welcome aboard and yes you can, some members also leave the smoke generator on for additional heat
