New to the forum and my first post.
I purchased the newest Maverick ET732 in order to monitor my meat temp and my cabinet temp.
I put the probe down through the vent on the top.
After about 4 hours, the probe failed and jumped from 140 to well over 300.
I'm wondering if anyone else has placed the probes any other way with success
That's how I run mine (through the top). Sounds like a defective probe. Tech guys will be by soon to trouble shoot. Hopefully you did not get them wet. They are very sensitive to that. Replacing a food probe right now bc of that.
Sounds like you got moisture In the probe. Lots of members including myself, sealed the ends with Red Rtv Silicone. It's food safe. Some have out the probe in the home oven to dry it out and then sealed it. I never had the issue cause I sealed mine as soon as I got it.

O just baked and redone mine. Put it in oven at 350 making sure to leave plastic hang out. I plug mine in to monitor. Back till comes down where it belongs usually 1-3 hours. Let cool then apply the red silicon rtv. Find it ar walmarts auto

I have the same unit and I had the same problem at first. When I ran it through the vent I used to let it hang straight down. My theory on that was that moisture would be attracted to the vent opening, collect on the probe wire and run down into it. Later, I started hanging it off to one side, through one of the rack openings.
Now, I just run it next to the meat probe wire through the door opening. The door gasket seals well enough that there's no heat loss.
I fixed my bad probe the way some others have mentioned by heating it in an oven at 350*F for several hours, letting it cool and then applying food safe RTV between the probe and the wire to seal out moisture.
welcome to the forum, contact maverick and see if they will send you a new probe, and rtv silicon where the lead enters the probe solves the issue

To update my situation, I did receive a replacement temp probe from the folks at Maverick.
I purchased some red rtv sealant and will seal both new probes before using.
I will let you know how this all turns out. Want to smoke a prime rib for Christmas and don't want to screw it up.

Do you think I can save my probe in the oven if its reading an -H- message? No harm in giving it a shot I guess unless -H- means dead...

That's what mine was reading until I did the oven trick. Don't bake the plastic plug, just the wire and metal probe.
I had rtv on mine before it messed up. Guess I need to try o get that off so the moisture can escape. I'll give it a shot.

Well I have kept mine going like that. And when the silicon wore off cleaned re baked and sealed again. Haven't had to replace another since.
Leave it plugged in till the HH goes a way.

Here is my update after smoking my prime rib last week:
1) placed damaged probe in oven for 3 hrs to dry it out.
2) purchased the Permatex 81160 High-Temp Red RTV silicon gasket at my local WalMart for less than $5.
3) coated the probes where they connect to the wires and also ran the stuff up the wires about 15 inches. Rubbed it in good with rubber gloves on.
Smoked my prime rib and placed the probes through the door gasket as advised and not through the top vent.
The outside temp was between 39-44 that day and it took right at 4 hrs to get the meat up to 140 which is what I was shooting for.
The meat turned out great and the Maverick performed as advertised.
Maverick did send me two new probes (one of each) even though I only complained about the bbq probe as having failed.
They responded in a timely manner and I had my replacement probes in less than a week.
They also sent me the 6 footers instead of the short ones that come with the ET732.
Very satisfied with how they handled my problem.

I wouldn't smoke with out one any more. Love to be able to do something then sit at the smoker. But to me the high and low alarm is worth it by its self. Twice it caught the power out and saved my meat. And if Im smoking I set it to 10* above my highest temp. I dont get over concerned but any thing with a heating element can cause a fire. Now I dont miss my old westerns! LOL!
