Title: Smoked Sunflower Seeds 4 ways + 3lbs of LoVe
Post by: classicrockgriller on February 25, 2013, 07:17:19 PM
Well I did it and have mixed reviews on the finish product.

I used 2 cups for each recipe. The recipes were:

Balzin Pistachio, Gafala's post, 1/2 cup Sweet Baby Ray's Honey Chipotle cut

with 1/4 cup water, and . . . NAKED.

First I had to get the racks ready to hold them little critters.

Mixed everything up and put wet ingredients and seeds and vac pack them for an hour or so.

Smoked for 40 minutes with Apple Wood. After the smoke I brought them

inside to dry in the oven .....

Had to give them a stir every now and again with dual purpose back scratch-er/nut stir-er.

While those were drying I had these ready to go in. Blazin Pistachio's

2 hours of Hickory at 225 and another hour of dry time and you get 3 lbs of sweet love.

In the end the NAKED Sunflower Seeds were pretty good. Needs more and stronger smoke.
Same with the Blazin Pistachio recipe. I liked both of them.

Gafala's recipe was vey nice tasting and would be a good pistachio seasoning with

some changes, but on Sunflower Seeds it just made a clumpy mess. (still air drying)

The Sweet Baby Ray's was a total disaster. I don't think they will ever dry.

After thinking about it the two things that Gafala and Sweet Baby Ray had in common was Sugar.

Went and checked on my smoker this morning .........

Looks like I lost a nut.

Did any flavor get inside the shell?  Looks mighty interesting!

Hard to really say for me since I am a "Throw the Whole Seed in your Mouth"

type person.

After the vac seal the shells were soft to the touch.

Might work better if you could get a hold of the larger Sunflower seeds.
