Title: I are a Farmer
Post by: classicrockgriller on March 20, 2013, 08:06:58 AM
Was thinking about a garden this year.

Been almost 20 years since I had one.

After putting a pencil to it just decided it wasn't worth it.

Get a call from the local Lawn and Garden center where I had
looked at tillers. Guy says they had an expo and could give
me a good deal on the tiller that was showed at the expo.

When I got there he said sign here and here and back up to
that ramp.

STOP! I'm still just looking. He said "Sons said to tell you
Happy early Fathers' Day".

I ask if I could just have the $$.

Now I have to plant a Garden.

Heavy Duty front bumper for running into trees

Says here it runs fast as a rabbit

Going to have to get started fast cause the trees are blooming new leaves

And the oak pollen is already fallin'

Going to use the wide roll version. Had good luck with that in the past.

Wish me luck!

You must be one heck of a great dad and you've done a good job of raising those boys. Nice gift!!

If you lived here you wouldn't have to worry about planting your garden yet. We still have snow on the ground and it snowed another 2" overnight. Still haven't seen any earth where the veg garden is supposed to be. :'(

Your son is no dummy.
He knows that there is no way you can eat all the produce that will come off of your garden. He knows where the extra will go. Have fun with your new toy. I just covered my garden last year with black plastic and cut holes in the plastic and planted what I wanted in the holes. I had more cucumbers then I knew what to do with. I had to use a pickup tool to get them but I got quite good with it.

All we have up here is freeze dried woods right now!
Nice present there dad  :)

Nice score Sonny.  I'm sure all the bread you baked, potato salad you made, and meat you cooked probably helped steer your son to this great gift.  Hope to meet him someday and shake his hand.

There are good boys and I know how to work them.

Just talk about things you want and they get the hint pretty good.

For Christmas they got me a Sig Sauer P250 9mm. Started hinting
on that in August.

Thinking on about a 40 X 50 or 40 X 60 garden. I have so much wild
life here that deer and rabbits and other critters will be a problem (if
the garden grows) and I have that much fencing to enclose the area.
Title: Re: I are a Farmer

Sonny
I have the same problem with deer but I have found a solution. I mount a motion detector to a post that looks over the garden. I set the sensitivity up quite high.  On a second post just to the side but behind the motion detector I drive a second Post. To this post I mount a good old loud and cheap rummage sale drill. In the drill I have a mix master blade mounted. I stick the blade through about a 10 inch chunk of that rubbery foam that they use to pack equipment and instruments in. I wire the foam to the blade. I then tie a couple of Wal-Mart bags through holes in the foam and cut the bottom of the bags off so they flap and make lots of noise when they spin. I put a small plastic flower pot over the drill to keep the rain and sprinkler water out of the drill. I just let the shaft of the mix master blade stick out of the pot. I have the motion detector set on test so when it sees motion it only runs for 10 seconds. I screw one of the fittings that turns a light fixture into a plugin and this is where I plug the drill to the motion sensor. Deer hate noise but mostly they hate the motion. It scares the crap out of them. All I hear is the sound of the drill for a few seconds and the sound of a deer snorting about 100 yards away. I have done this for the last 5-6 years and they don't touch my garden. No fence to maintain and keep closed. At the end of the season I shut off the drill and let them have what is left of the garden.
Here is a picture of the drill set up. I just use a band clamp with a couple of holes drilled through it and screwed to the post to hold the drill to the post. Lock the drill trigger on and you are set.

The thing weighed like 4 pounds, noisy as all get out.

An old country woman told me to plant marigolds around my garden to keep out animals.Tried it last year and didn't have a single plant come up missing or chewed on.I think it's the smell of them that deter the animals. It's worth trying for only a couple of bucks for seed packs.

Post by: classicrockgriller on March 21, 2013, 07:05:05 AM
I am not so sure I want to be a Farmer.

I slept terrible, woke up stiff as a board, got aches in my body
all the way to my toes and a dang blister on my thumb.

I finished all the first till in a rough out area so it could sit for a
couple of days to kill some of the vegetation.

When I use to plant a garden, I would start in late January and
till about once a week and let the cold weather take care of killing
the growing stuff. Since I got started late I will till every 3 days or
so for the next two weeks and then plant.

First till.

Tiller handles great. Look how straight that outside line is.

Today I will set the borders for the size the garden is to be
and finished the little bit of tilling to finish that off.

I don't know if I will but I use to plant a second season garden
that grew into December and January. I may be sick of being a
Farmer by then.

I squared up the garden and used my horseshoe poles for corner rods and
put a string up between them and tilled what I didn't till yesterday.

Ended up being a 60 x 45. I may plant my cukes in a different location away
from the main garden.

(Man am I sore!)

Thinking that I was behind in planting, I called a friend that has a
garden every year and after talking with him I have decided to plant:
Snap Beans and Pinto Beans (bush variety)
Lima Beans (bush variety) (Sorry Chris ;D )
both Slicing and Pickling Cukes
small dab of Eggplant
Purple Hull and Southern Peas
Jalapenos (asst heat)
Bell Peppers, (asst)
Bananna Peppers (asst)
Squash
Tomatoes (asst)
Okra.

I decided against Corn cause I have tried and not had good luck with it.
I usually buy corn on sale (4 ears for $1) and get 2 cases and cook and
freeze that. With a few cans of corn, that will last me the year.

He told me that I'm not really behind, but do need to get seeded plants in
ground soon. Plan is to till every 3 days the rest of this week and next week
and start planting the week after Easter.

Glad I can just look at the garden area tomorrow instead of tilling. I am SORE!

I have found a couple of things while I was tilling:
2 foot piece of heavy duty chain with double hooks
20 foot piece of heavy duty chain
(bet they were used together on some project)
     oil filter
     4 bricks
enough liter pine to last me a year
the remnants of a scrub brush

Felt like I was on a scavenger hunt and I won. ;D

The more I read this the more I crack up. You are going to need the boys to come over and give you a hand on the weeding. If you eat day and night you will never eat everything that garden will produce.

If I had started in January tillin', the weeds would be null and void. But
I know I have a small challenge on hand. Leavin a 2 ft walk way to run
the tiller (17 inches) thru, that will throw dirt back on the plants and kill
some weeds. (I hope!)

The short term plan is my friend has a tractor that he swears started up
by itself and ran over my garden.

This Monkey is tired!

I did the cross tilling today and it didn't get any easier. I got started and
tilled about half (OK 1/3) before I had to take a break. Went back to the
back door and was pulling my boots off and got a cramp in my leg. That
didn't help. Tilling with a wounded leg isn't fun.

We are under a severe thunder storm watch tonite so I had to finish before
that. The rain will give me a chance to see how the water runoff is going to
affect the Garden since there is a slope to the area. I might have to put
some land scaping timbers down to divert the water.

I call a friend up and he came over. We put our heads together ........

.....because the garden needs to be leveled out some and decided not
to use a tractor, but just screen drag it from front to back. The mule will
do that just fine.

I have a few days off so I think I will smoke something! ;D

The Old Fart that lives at the end of our "Dead End" road has had a
Spring/Fall garden every year that I can remember. We really don't
talk to each other since I caught him shooting a BB gun at my dog
that was on my property.

When I started tilling the garden he walked to our property line and
watched while me and the tiller rambled thru the garden. This morning
he was parked in the road with binoculars looking at the garden.

He probably took the big odds at Vegas that I won't be able to grow
a garden. ;D

Update!

We had two nights in a row with "Freeze Warnings". Got down to 26*.
Both days warmed up to 50/60* day time.

Yesterday I was suppose to till and level. Got a call from Son's and there
was a postponement on a job and ask if some guys could come over to
do things here at the House. Well I ain't stupid. Come on!

They mowed, weeded', clipped yapon bushes, cut dead trees, put new
tarps on dog pen, cleaned and straighten barn, but most important they
used the Mule to drag the Garden and then tilled #3 and I got to do what
I like to do. Fix a great lunch for every body.

I am usually the person that post too many pics, well I have none so you
will have to trust me on this. We had:

4 lbs of fresh 85/15 ground beef (ground the beef myself from shoulder
roast) made into 10 patties mixed with 3 eggs and a simple salt/pepper
seasoning. Grilled them on my Traeger along with a 8 pk of Angus all beef
wieners. Then the normal stuff: sliced tomatoes, onions, pickles, cheese, mayo
with olive oil and black pepper, reg yellow mustard, jalapeno mustard, sliced
avocado, sliced and diced sweet onion along with caramelized (onion & bell peppers).

Had cantaloupe, sliced cukes and onions in vinegar for side plates. Regular and BBQ
chips. Toasted the burger and dog buns in the oven with a brush of butter. Sweet
tea and of course Dr Peppers.

I never thought they were going to leave the table until I told them them I  had
Pecan Pie for desert and they moaned and went back outside. Clean up was a
breeze, not much left.

Not sure how much work was done after lunch, but it was a fun day to see
everyone that I use to see everyday. Kinda a kick back day, no pressure of
having to do something "on time". I enjoyed it, and I didn't have to till the Garden.

You have some great boys. If I can't do it myself I have to hire help. It sure sounds like they got a lot done and still had a good time. You must have done well raising those boys. The reward of some great food is always appreciated. [but no pictures] You are slipping.

I plant those in the Fall crop. The seeds germinate faster and with the cool air, the finished crop stays crisper on the vine.

That's funny. I dreamed I planted them once.

My "Garden from Hadez" has been kickin my butt.

I will be reporting soon with Pics.

I will state this:

I think I have the BIGGEST Pepper planting that You might have seen.

So, I thought I was ready to plant and we got bomboarded by two heavy rains.

A total of 8" in a 5 day span. I found out the area I had thought would make a

great garden would be better for a duck pond. So while it was drying out I had

the electric company come and remove the pole that was in the garden. I also

had a load of top soil delivered and hired a guy with a tractor to level out my

garden. I finally got to start planting on Thursday after Easter and finished up

yesterday. Already I am seeing a lot of good things happening.

Sonny
You must do all your planting in the morning before afternoon cocktails. The rows are so straight. I am so impressed with how straight the rows are. You are going to have to use several deer chasers to keep them out of that garden. Either that or you are going
to hunt deer out a deer blind out by the garden.
