Title: Heat element wasn't on for 2 hours
Post by: viking611 on June 14, 2013, 06:59:41 PM
First time smoker here - i have an 8.2# pork shoulder in the smoker - been smoking for 2 hours - cabinet temp was only 150* when i checked it - i don't think the heat element was working even though it was cranked on and lit up.  It is glowing orange now and temp starting to rise.  Anything to worry about if it gets up to 220* soon?

Patience!
If it is lit and glowing it is working. The temp will drop due to the load. Pork will also stall where the temp will not budge for several hours. Watch the drippings and keep the tray clean and the water bowl filled.  You should be fine.
Remember to FTC when it reaches  temp  and it is done when it is done. Don't rush it !!
Enjoy!!

Make sure all of your plugs are well seated and making good connections on the back of the smoker
