We got back to Basel last weekend having spent two weeks in Tuscany. On the journey there we stopped off for a couple of days in Bologna which is a really happening university town. Lots going on and some great eats.
A couple of shots from our hotel room balcony. We stayed in the old part of the city (yes, that lower tower leans).

Here are a couple of shots of some charcuterie shops and a deli or two -

One eats exceptionally well in Italy if you avoid the tourist traps and eat only where locals can be found (no menus in English).
Those are some fun looking shops and I agree with you about getting away from the tourist areas of any locale, that's where the best foods and times can be found.
Fantastic.... I love Italy, the Mrs and I go at least once a year, sometimes more. It's nice enough being able to get a cheap flight out of London .... but even nicer for you I expect to hop in the car and cross a single border to get there :D
We also agree wholeheartedly with the following statement:

Nice!
The best slice of pizza I've ever had was at the train station in Bologna.. Unfortunately that's all we saw of that town.
