keep it out of the wind. top vent wide open works best in my opinion. And keep the door closed cause if your looking your not cooking. this smoker is a low and slow method so give yourself lots of time to complete. time is a guideline but the meat is done when its done. no question is dumb so be prepared before you start cooking. plan ahead and keep a journal so you know what works and what doesn't. have fun and welcome aboard..
For seasoning should I just follow what's in the book or is there a better technique.

follow the book that's all it needs.. it will season more as its used
