Title: Two Day $700.00 Ad
Post by: Oldman on February 15, 2007, 08:42:33 PM
Two Day $700.00 Ad and 94 people have applied for the work... phew it has be one long week of interviews.... if they pass the DOD background check then I've hired 7 this week and it is over with. Lordie I hope they all pass.

I hate doing interviews....I hate being the one that makes the choice of who get a crack at the job and who does not.

I here ya Olds... It's not a fun or easy task! Actually, it's a whole lotta stress!
I can relate because I own an general insurance brokerage and motor licensing office. There are benefits to owning your own business but like any other career there are trade offs. Success has it's price!

Hey on the positive side when it's done....
Fire the smoker... grab a beer and kick back!  8)  8)  ;D

QuoteHey Olds, sort me out a greencard and I'm your man!

Would if I could but the DOD does not allow defense contractors or defense sub-contractors to employ anyone with a greencard.  It has to be proved that the employee is a US citizen. Now get this.... At MacDill AFB (I have a contract out there as well) SOcom allows a contractor to employ people with green cards.... go figure that one out.

QuoteWow olds id kill to be able to go through that many people to weed out the good ones .

If we had not run within the ad the discriminator as I stated above we would have had 400 to 500 calls. Last year I did not place it into an ad "that a person had to prove they were a US citizen (DOD)" and I bet we took close to 500 calls.

Of course our benefit package is just about second to none in this area:
5 personal days
1 week paid vacation
Paid Holidays
Health Insurance  100% coverage, we also pay for a rider that covers the deductible and a rider that pays $250.00 per day when a person is in the hospital, and we pay for coverage of minor children.  Furthermore, we have it set up that if a person is hurt on the job and ends up in the hospital let's say for 3 days they are then paid directly $1,750.00 to help cover their home expenses.

These riders not only cover injury / accident they also covers health problems... They are not part of our heath insurance they are seperate. Our health insurance is not an HMO it is a PPO.

Also I'm of high hopes that before the end of the year we can offer a 401K matching 50 cents on the dollar.

I know most here think I'm joking when I say I'm retired... the fact is I'm retired. I'm only doing this for chits and giggles. To give folks the kind of job they have only dreamed about. In fact I return 80% of all contract dollars via my employees salary and benefits to my customers.  In this industry normally the company keeps 80%!

Oh I do pay Susan $1000.00 per week (she is also teaching school  ;D ) plus I bonus out to her at year's 48K. Hopefully, by mid summer she well be recieving $1,500.00.  I drawn no monies... I don't need to....as I said I'm retired.

Hey Icerat... with demographics the way they are it's going to get worse before it's gets better. At least that's the case here in Canada.

All I can say is employees are idiots! yes all of them although some are just once in a great while.  That's what I tell my boss why I am happy just to work for him cuz I wud fire everyone else if I was him.  Having employees under you is the pits.  I have only had 1 or 2 really great ones in the years others had numerous short comings.

The rug looks like a modified berber carpet; if it is I bet it is a nylon fiber and not an olefin fiber which is the fiber used most often in a berber.  Cleaning an olefin with that toy would be almost impossible.

To funny....

What is not funny is the mass in my industry has never been to school and rely upon a salesperson for the chemistry.

The mills still manufacture 3rd, 4th, and 5th generation nylons. The chemistry for a 5th generation is not effective on a 3rd or 4th. The chemistry for a 3rd or 4th can / may damage a 5th generation. None of them are effective on an olefin. The chemistry for an olefin is a complete NO NO on any generation nylon.

Most *cough* professional cleaners learn via osmosis at the expense of the customer.  Then again most customers still believe you can get 4 rooms and a hall cleaned for $99.99!

Oh I better hit the Post button before I get on my soap box.... *

Just about any Commerical twin motor upright that filters into the hepa range is good. The 14" Versamatic is a great machine. It will out live your children. There is no way a homeowner can wear out a standard Versamatic.  We have one that has been bouncing in the back of a van for close to 8 years... it just never stops working. (I don't know anything about the super versamatic.) Look to pay around $550.00 for the unit. Its list is closer to $800.00.

Here is a link. (http://www.blenders.net/catalog/Windsor-Versamatic-R-VS-upright-Commercial-Vacuum-FREE-SHIPPING-p-16133.html)  Make sure to order bags.

When you pull out the hose to do detail work with crevic tool the floor bush stops. It has a light on it that comes on when it is time to change out the bag.

How does this unit compare to the dyson.Same or way better in suction.

I cannot say as I know of no commerical carpet manufactures that have a dyson on their approved list. Thus I have never used it.  I know of no Cyclonic Vacuums that are used commerically in my industry other then the Host Liberator ($4000.00) and the Host Freestyle ($3,400.00) which are basically a dry carpet cleaning method.  You might want to find a versamatic locally in a Janitorial Suppy House, and go look it over.

Olds,
What method of carpet cleaning do you recommend?

QuoteOlds,
What method of carpet cleaning do you recommend?

For your home I like hot water extraction, based on the IICRC Standard S001. You can find an IICRC Certified Cleaner in your area by going to the IICRC Web Site. (http://www.iicrc.org/) The IICRC is non-profit, and it was established in 1972 - 73.  I'm a Master IICRC Certified Cleaner. (I have 6 certifications.)

Remember just like we can get a bad doctor you can get a bad Certified Cleaner. They will give you at least 3 names in your area.

Here is a thought for you.  Soils deposit in what I call the "sink" area. (First 8 or so feet into your home.) If you were to put a good WaterHog mat that is large enough for you to take 6 full steps on the outside of your house then the soils will deposit there. I have a saying concerning the sink...if you control the sink then you control the soil load in the building.

I like WaterHog mats... they last for many many years and they are very effective. (OH P.S. they are not cheap at first; however, I have one that has been outside my front door now for 17 years, so in the long run they are very cost effective.)

Solid rubber nubs prevent carpet from crushing.
Non-slip rubber backing

This one is a standard mat. You can get them in different designs.
For the outside of the house DO NOT get the ones that have rubber edges dammed for water containment.

Thanks Olds,
Very interesting.  Took a look at your link for Certs in our area.  Only one had a website that worked.  They also advertised dry carpet cleaning for less soiled carpet.  Was surprised that someone certified in hot water extration would even consider another method.
