I was just wondering what folks are paying for pork belly. I paid $1.99 lb. yesterday. A year and a half ago it was $1.29. Big increase. Maybe I'll start investing in pork belly. :D ;D
Just make sure you do not forget that you are playing commodity markets. My buddy did a similar thing a while back. He forgot he was actually buying a contract that could actually be delivered. He had to scramble when they called to ask where he wanted the railcars delivered ot. :o
Had he not acted fast he would have had 4 railcars of porkbelly to do something with. I sure would not have wanted to smoke all that :)
I just got a 12 pound belly for $1.67/lb. with plenty of meat on it.
Hab that's a great price wish I could find that price down here! These Cajuns are proud of pork of any kind down here pork belly 12# would have to be financed for a couple of month at least... ;)
1.99 is about where i end up on a sale. The bigger issue is that a whole slab has to be ordered from the butcher shop. Everywhere else it seems is already sliced.
I have to get mine from a smokehouse when they get their's in. No butcher shops up here. Next time I'm getting it where Hab's got his. That is a great price.

Yeah! That is a good price. I was upset when I was quoted a price of $1.50/lb, and when it came in I had to pay $1.67/lb; but now I see I still got a good deal.
Until recently I had forgotten about this slaughter house that is about 10 miles from me. It a small operation and has been in the area for ages, I don't know how I forgot about it. I was reminded of them when a friend of mine was giving a pig roast, and he purchased his pig from them. The reason the price is less, it's because they raise and slaughter their own animals, thus cutting out the middle man. All the meat they sell is FDA approved. The only down side is they don't always have bellies, so you have to order them and wait until they start slaughtering some of their hogs.
