OK,
We all share a common bond with a passion for smoking, especially with the Bradley. Olds has shared some of his other loves with us and sometimes there's an occasional chime in, but it is usually OT on the thread & gets buried.
I figure we should have a thread all its' own dedicated to the subject. I'll go first:
In no particular order,
--Impersonating a chef, with a heavy lean towards smoking.
--Watching IRL racing, driving go-karts (the real ones).
--Fishing & hunting (salmon, wallys, pheasant).
--Gun collecting, especially Class III.
--Our pup Buck.
--Beer & brewing, although I haven't found time for the brewing part lately.
--Doing my best to support the local Hooter's wherever I roam.[;)]

Chez,
What I like to do but don't get a chance often enough to do is share what I've learn (generally the hard way)in my life. Before I make my list of lessons, I have question for you. How in the name of the good Green Earth can you collect Class III weapons. Are you a dealer?
My List:
--Never put more on your credit card then you have in your wallet. (I was bankrupt in 1983.)
--Never let the next customer through the door know you have holes in your shoes. (No one does business with a loser.)
--Never let your loved one leave without you telling her how much you love her. (I've been widowed twice.)
--Never be ashamed to show the soft side of your belly when your emotions are true. (I also have buried two children.)
--Never be afraid to forgive yourself when you have wrong a good person. (I've been divorced and it was my fault.)
--Never forget that your retirement is based not only on what you save, but what you purchase. (Generally something costing more will last 5 times longer then the next level down.)
--Never let a week go by that you don't pay yourself, just like you do your light bill. (Or you will spend your whole life worrying that something might happen.)
--Never say that a person is ugly. (If you give them a change you will find that even in the worse there is some beauty in every soul.)
--Never be ashamed of your convictions. If you are a Godly person then live that witness. (For some folks the only God they will ever see is the one living within you.)
I will finish with this one as it is the hardest of all to learn perhaps even to understand.
--Never be afraid of the greatest test of life: To be last one to die. (Two years ago I sat around a table playing cards with my 4 best girls. Today there is only 2 left. I hope these two never know the pain of my death, but that I am the one to suffer the memories. I'm no longer afraid to be the last one to die. Though in all honesty I'm not looking forward to it.)
I know this was not quite what you had in mind Chez, but it is what I never seem to get to do...sharing truths I've learned.
Olds
<b>EDIT: Chez why not pin this topic? I hate to see it get lost one day.</b>
Hello all,
Chiming in to give us all a look at the life that goes on outside of smoking stuff in the BS.
I love to cook, dispite my wife being much better at it. The damn food network was so inspiring that we will be doing a kitchen remodel soon. "My part" of the kitchen will be a part of it. All kinds of commercial appliances like a Hobart Microwave, Commercial mixer, steam oven and my Espresso corner. I grind my own flower, bake bread, and roast my own coffee.
After retiring I still work part-time for large HMO as an Advice RN. I will probably work until I drop over. I like the toys and like to do a couple of cruises every year.
I still like to shoot, and have some nice H&K P9S handguns, both 9 mm and 45 cal., a pistol grip shotgun-the universally understood burgular deterrent, and an H&K91 like assault rifle, oops I mean a sportarized rifle. Like to shoot targets now and again, but nothing else.
I do a little computerized embroidery..used to develop computer graphic files into machine language to sew out on computer embroidery machines for cutomers... I have a machine, so still do stuff for grandkids, family, and friends once in awhile.
Into photography, auto racing and off-road trips once in awhile. Married with 3 children & 5 grandchildren. Love computers, internet, Pizza and my miniture Rottweiler (4 lb Yorkshire Terrier), Chump, AKA The Road Warrior, who travels with me to racing events(Wife thinks I drive too fast) - the dog doesn't complain or get white knuckles.
Bill
Wow kids!
Lemme think...
Cooking - that's obvious!
Umm...change that to eating, hee hee!
Smoking for sure
Grilling....will the food ever stop? I hope never to lose the sense of taste or smell.
Fishing - used to be trout and now the hunt is on for the elusive Walleye...salmon and halibut when I get to Alaska one day
Mountains...Eastern Sierra is a range you can't beat!
Camping with my wife in our 5th wheel.
Traveling..wherever we can
The two dogs..they are our surrogate children now that ours have flown the nest.
Getting to live a dream...the log home in Chattaroy (Spokane area) of Washington.
Although not a hunter, I do like the guns...Ruger Mini 14; Ruger 10-22; Marlin 22; Ruger Security Six double action...the 22's for plinking cause it's cheap to shoot em; the mini-14 cause I wanted it; the security six for a variety of things.
I'd love to learn home brewing on the beer Chez!
There are many more but that's enough for now.
Olds: Great outlook you have - don't let it escape you and share it where you can.

My turn,
* Cooking/smoking probably #1 passion
* Fishing, especially all kinds of Bass, largemouth "smallies" and best of all Stripers.(only one P in stripers)[:)]
* hiking, (especially this time of year)along the water falls with my wife and friends.(we too are empty nesters).
* intrested in starting my own catering and/or internet and/or retail business selling smoked foods.
* boating,swimming,waterskiing.
* building PC's
* playing bass guitar
I have been laid off all summer, just landed a job as a Systems Technician in the IT department for a school district here in PA.
I think thats about it.
<i><font color="blue"><b>Jack</i></font id="blue"></b>
Must say WOW before I start.
This little exercise has really changed the way I look at you folks. I sincerely appreciate the folks that have added to this post. Thank you allowing us(me) to see a little of what others are like around here instead of just a bunch of key stokes.
Lets see.
-Born in California, raised in Arizona, living in Arkansas.
-Went to college in Flagstaff majoring in Police Science but ended up in Dallas Texas getting a degree in Theology. Found my wife.
-Been married to the same great gal for the past 24 years. She be hot and She be foxy.
-Have two kids, one of each, almost out of school.
-Main priority of my life (presently) is making sure my kids have "the goods" before they go out into this crazy world.
-Sorry, I do love NASCAR. Go-Mark Martin!
-Spent 20 years in the IT corporate world and made to be VP. Got to the place where I could not stand one more managers meeting and the owner saying "we are going to drive this company", to where-I don't know. Also finding out that letters like VP really don't mean a thing at the end of the day except for gastro and sphincter pains.
-Now walk to work. With only one other partner and secretary in the office. Accident reconstruction to be exact, mainly for Insurance, Trucking and Construction companies. (Love those Air-Bags)
-Shot guns is the weapon of choice. Love my Remington 870 the best. You can throw it mud, water, anything and it just keeps working. One day I'll have to tell you a story about thawing my barrel out with frozen mud in it with hot coffee. (Kirk, after spending the last 18 months on a Federal Grand Jury, this class III has me bit worried.)
-Did I mention I love to duck hunt.
-Needless to say, SMOKING.
Have a great day everyone.

If a man says he knows anything at all, he knows nothing what he aught to know. But...
Olds & MW: No, not a dealer, just an ordinary citizen. Thankfully Indiana has a different view on the subject than The People's Republik of Kalifornia. Class 3's are regulated under the NFA act of 1934.
Since that time, two, I repeat <b>TWO</b>, crimes have been commited with those weapons according to the ATF. Two crimes in seventy years!
Do not confuse it with the recently expired assault weapons ban. That did nothing to hinder crime.
I'll take odds on my buddy Dave who actually target shoots with a single-shot rifle over any gang-banger with a Pac-9 with a 30 round mag.
Olds,
Florida is a MG friendly state. You can own one if you want to do it legal.
I've got no kids, or will have, but buried my 1st wife when she was 31. What a waste to lose to a brain tumor. If you don't think I ask God why everyday, you're mistaken.[:(] The only consolance I have is He has given me Anne.
Don't want to get into a pissing contest about who's got it worst, just want you know I'm kinda coming from the same background. Feels good to share.

Ya think next time I check into a hotel & they ask "Smoking or Non?" they would mind?
My passions:
*early Pennsylvania iron stoves (from about the late 1700's to the
early-mid 1800's especially from the Lebanon County area)
*love to hunt (well, I love to get into the woods, could care less
if I ever shoot anything. To me, it's more about the social aspect
of going to bear/deer camp in the deep woods and just hanging with
my other cabin members. We have no elec at camp, just propane
lights and a "wonderfully fragrant" outhouse. We're the last cabin
on the mountain back a long state forest road.)
*smokin' & cookin'
*racing (not as much anymore, used to own a car with my brother as
driver, but we both realized that there's more to life than living
in the garage & dumping a ton of $$ into the race car and then
having a nitwit go out and run into the car and $!@*!%$# it up.)
*homebrewing beer, but like Chez, having a hard time getting to the
brewing part. Drinking part is no problem. In fact just put on a
1/2 keg of Yeungling Premium in the pole barn I am building
(30x80x12).
*no kids and am not married. Happily single. Graduated from Shippensburg Univ with a degree in Speech Communication & a minor in Criminal Justice. I was a finance manager & salesman for a local auto dealership for 6 years. Glad to be out of that business. I joined my brother & father in their new/used appliance store a number of years ago. I couldn't be happier to work for myself/family. Took a huge paycut, but $$ is not what makes my world go 'round. I call it a quality of life issue.
*Got a Brittany Spamiel who turns 12 tomorrow. The spammy is still pretty spry for his age. His passion is my smoker, too. He seems to like whatever comes out of it. <font color="red">EDIT--After I posted this, on Saturday, I thought we were going to lose the spam. He started to have a really rough time breathing, keeping his snout in the air to gasp. I stayed up all sat night with him. I'm told he has laryngeal paralysis. Hopefully medication will keep him around for a while longer. He's healthy otherwise. Boy, it's heartbreaking to watch him go through this.

Of course she is not promoting it... *couch* I guess she is waiting for me to do that. Nevertheless, there is a gallery there. It is listed on the side bar of the second page. Cool website Olds!
I may have to send a couple of pictures. My 14 year old chocolate lab passed away in May. She was a great dog. I ended up adopting a black lab from "the pound" . He seemed to need a good home. You should see him walking around the backyard with his chest all puffed out. He seems to be proud about something. We'll see this weekend how he does in the field.
I see you even found a place to plug our shared hobby. Nice plug for Chez as well.
Doug
Thanks for the good words, guys. I'll keep you posted. The tussengill (sp?) seems to help him breathe a little better, but he can't over-exert himself. It's tough to make a dog that likes to be in constant motion when he's outside take it easy. He has to slow down & rest pretty often right now so he can breathe.
PAsmoker, I really feel for you. I had a Shar Pei that only lived to 5 - she was one of the greatest dogs around...she unfortunatley had some breathing problems too...had drains placed in her lungs for weeks..x-rays revealed a gray mass...surgery revealed all of her internal organs had fused together with some form of cancer and she passed away on the operating table..still makes my cry to write about it...she's got a nice straw broom plant growing over her high up in the Lake Arrowhead community in the San Bernardino Mountains in Southern California...

Thanks Kirk..that was a not so good time for me...I loved that dog like no other and I don't think I'll ever get over her loss. It's now been over 10 years since her passing. I'll probably be the same way about my two Boston Terriers when they pass.
Some might think that I'm a crackpot (I don't care!) but I swear she still visits me from time to time...she sits on the floorboard on the passenger side of my truck when she visits.
Well, now I gotta go have a slug of the Bombay Blue Sapphire...

EDIT: Not sure why that 1st pic is so huge....
Hey there all,
Been meaning to get on this topic, but lack of time lately. Wanted to give it some thought, but my thought wound up being if I keep waiting for something to be better, I'll never get to it, so here goes:
Outdoors - Camping, Hunting, Fishing in no particular order.
I'm a hardware kind of guy by way of upbringing - that is I was tought to shoot a gun and fish with spinning lures. 2 years and 3 seasons ago I took up bow hunting so I may one day learn to fly fish.
Family - Married 6 years, two boys one 3 and one about 7 months.
Newest passion of course is the world of smoked food. Best thing I've done in a while was buy the Bradley and join this forum. This is the only forum I am a member on and it has been more than a lot of fun[:D]
Other hobbies used to include leather work, but I kind of fell off of that lately. I'm taking a cabinet making course right now and it is great, I love working with wood.
One thing I was delaying in posting this reply, is that I needed to upload a pic to photobucket. Here is a pic taken last month that sums up a whole lot of my other loves:

I only had the bow out the one time this year so far. We haven't had whitetails on the farm for some years now. They were going in cycles where the WT would be plentiful and then the Muleys but for some time the Mules took over and won't go away.
Rifle starts in a week, so I doubt I'll be out again this year with the bow. Happy to have taken this guy. Actually that was the only way I was going to get a MD this year. Our zone is now draw for general season and I missed out this year. WT have always been a general tag, so until that changes I chase them every year...

Whitetail,
About the only deer we have east river South Dakota are whitetail. I have only hunted east river so I have never tagged a muley. I was looking at the rack (which looks different than a WT) and noticed how big the ears were.
Nice Rack,

You all and you deer...LOL
If your deer where the size of our Key West Deer you would throw them back into the water and tell them to come back when full grown~~!
I bet your jack rabbit is longer than our deer it tall! [:D]
im from indianapolis... have not missed the indy 500 since my very first race in 1975 at an age of 15 years old...
im am first and foremost a indy-style racing enthusiast... secondly a sprint car and midget car racing enthusiasts...
next on the list would be the drags, flat track motorcycle racing and more racing and more racing...
live rock concerts is something else we dig... it all started with robin trower at the indiana state fairgrounds in 1975 and the latest was alice cooper at the grove of anaheim two nights ago...
i have been to approx 150 indy-style races... approx 40 nhra-style drag races and approx 200 others... i have been to approx 200 rock concerts...
so thats it... racing and rock n roll...
i have an engineering license and spent 20 years in the hvac business in indianapolis... then i started a european-style indoor go-kart racing facility which went out of business a year after selling my stock...
now i travel the west coast in a f550 draging a 38' featherlite trailer which houses 8 individual hearing test booths... me and my girl micki (who is the worlds number 2 racing fanatic) go from factory to factory providing audiometric test for workers...
while doing the audiometric job i have my hvac license farmed out to a local company in indianapolis which keeps me in the loop...
we have no home and stay in hotels 340 nights a year and the other 25 nights at friends houses... the only thing we own is a jeep which is in mickis moms barn in waverly iowa...
i got the bs because i dig the pig and i dig the cow... its hard low-carbing always rolling on... the bs makes low-carbing easier and the spoils are now even better...
so now its all about racing... rocking... smoking the meat...
the thing i miss most about being on the road all the time is doing things with my old friends... other than that its a wonderfull life...
owrstrich

If a man says he knows anything at all, he knows nothing what he aught to know. But...
Well, I see that I have a lot in common with many of you. The people you pass on the street and may not even notice could be more like you than you know.
-Homebrewing- I also have not brewed in about two years but hope to during the holiday season. When not brewing I enjoy Yuengling Lager (A Pennsylvania beer mmmmmmm)
-Cooking- This has always been a passion of mine. It's a good thing because my wife's abilities are limited.(She's in bed so she can't see me typing this)
-Backpacking- My favorite trip was a 10 day adventure in the White Mountains of New Hampshire. There's no sense of accomplishment greater than climbing until you can go no further...then having to go further and making it.
-Hunting- Small game and whitetail. I hunted for 18 years and never shot a deer. That didn't matter as much as the time that my father and I spent together in the woods. In Aug. of 2002, my father passed away from a heart attack at 58 yrs old. I took his gun and his deer tags hunting with me that year. At 7 am on the first day of deer season I shot my first buck with his gun and tagged it with his tag, bagging my first and my father's last deer. At 1 pm I shot another buck and tagged it with my tag. It was a good tribute.
-My dog Sadie- She's a four year old Vizsla (Hungarian pointer) and she's still got a lot of puppy left in her. Tracy and I love her to death and spoil her like a child. Early last week my wife took her cat (Emily) of 11 years to the vet with respiratory problems. The vet found masses in three of her six lung lobes and a mass around her heart. Her lungs were filled with fluid and she could not breathe. After several tests and treatments, the vet said there was nothing else they could do. We made the hardest decision I ever had to make and decided to put her down. You want to keep them around for as long as you can but there reaches a point when their suffering makes it selfish to do so. I never was a cat person but I miss that cat so much. The next morning, my wife woke me up and she was crying. I thought she was upset about Emily and asked her what was wrong. She told me that she had just taken a pregnance test and it was positive. We are going to have our first child. Then she said, "I guess that's why Emily had to go". It amazing how the Lord works.
-Collecting- Almost anything. Guns, coins, sports cards, comic books. Our house looks like a yard sale exploded.
-Camping- My wife and I go to the Jamboree in the Hills every year in our motorhome. 1977 GMC, real beauty. Oh well, at least the 8 track player still works. The Jamboree is probably the best party I've ever been to (and it turned my wife into a country music fan) Get on their website Jamboreeinthehills.com.
I graduated with a dual degree in Anthropology and Criminal Justice. I was an archaeologist for four years before becoming a police officer in PA six years ago. A lot of people don't realize that cops are the same as everyone else. We all have the same fears, hopes, dreams and aspirations. I'm 32 and still don't know what I want to do when I grow up. Thanks to everyone for sharing and helping this new smoker out!
Bill
Now dammit Bill, don't go takin' all the fun out of this thread with all the dyin' & birthin' stuff![:D]
J/K, you kind of struck a chord. No kidding about how similar total strangers can be. My dad died at 44 when I was 19, his rifles still rest proud in my rack.
There's also a fair contingent of us that do know cops are just regular guys. My best friend in a detective for the Goshen Police Department, and I have several others on that force & the county's that I consider friends. You're all underpaid for the service you provide, yet the expectaitions set for performance, both on & off duty, are far above what is expected out of civillian America.
If I had my way, you, the firefighters & the teachers would be earning a lot more & the elected officials a lot less. If they want to be lobbed into the category of "serving their community or country for the good of America", they should be willing to do so for a lot less. You certainly do.

Smalls,
It has always been a dream of mine to be an officer of the law. I actually started college for that reason, Police Science was my major. I wanted to work for the Treasury; I always thought that part of the Secret Service was very interesting. My second choice was the FBI and third, a State trooper. Life does through you some curves, and sometimes you have to go with them. When I first entered college they gave me this huge, honkin test to tell me what I would like to do with my life. It told me that I needed to be a cartographer (map maker), the counselor didn't even know what that was. Two separate test told me the same thing. Two years ago I changed my job(after 20 years) and guess what I do. I survey road and highways, then draw them and interface with cops and troopers in several states for accident reconstruction. Well it's not exactly what I thought things would turn out like, but it's kind of close.
