Title: Reccomend a slicer for me :)
Post by: standles on July 16, 2007, 08:51:05 AM
All:

I am going to move forward with some jerky making as well as bacon production with the DBS I have.    I assume a slicer would make this a more enjoyable experience.    I was wondering if you folks with more experience in these matters would reccomend a brand/model that works well and possibly a supplier.

I have been looking at these but have no clue other than plucking them of amazon.

I have the chef's choice 667 international. It's a decent slicer with a 10" blade, fairly easy to clean and slices nicely. I just wish the cradle would come back farther for slicing bacon and larger cuts of meat. It comes back 8" would be happier with 10". Otherwise it's a good machine.

From the low end slicer experience I would recommend staying away from slicers with totally exposed blades such as is shown on the 632 model.  With the blade exposed, after the meat is sliced it is in full contact with the blade and has a tendency to stick to the blade and then rotate with it as the food holder is sometimes not able to keep a grasp on it.  My next slicer purchase will be in the more comercial style as I to want to have a longer slice capacity for slabs of bacon and top round for beef jerky.  The price tag for them is a bit steep and the size and weight is dawnting but I think I am up to the challenge to get the results.

The link below was a recent gift.  Cant make claims about durability yet but no reason to think i will ever have another one.  It is 10 inch and has had significant use the last month.  I think it is great.  :D

I agree with Gizmo. Slicers without the blade cover are difficult to use. As stated the blade will often twist the meat, especially when you are drawing back. If the tray tilts, then you can lessen the problem by tilting the tray away from the blade as you draw back.

Thanks for the points guys.

Blade Cover Good.
Longer Slide for bacon Good.

The search continues.  :)
