Title: How much does it cost to run a BS?
Post by: smokin stu on August 12, 2007, 04:39:31 PM
Someone asked me how much it costs to run a BS.  His concern was the price of the Bisquettes and the power consumption.  Anyone out there look at this before?

It should be pretty easy to figure out a "per hour" cost but was wondering if this has been done already.

Thanks,

I do not have an exact cost but to me it is cheap. It only uses about 600 watts an hour. That is a small price to pay for a smoker that is very user friendly and can be made friendlier with some add ons. Generally you only smoke for a maximun of 4 hours. The bisquette cost is not that big. I know some one with another brand of  smoker that has to constantly scrounge for wood. Again the Bradley is convenient to use.

I hope that helps, Brad

Even if you pay full retail for the smallest box of bisquettes, it will cost you less then $1.50/hr. to apply the smoke, which is generally four hours. The electricity could be calculated by reviewing the last electric bill and how much they charge per kilowatt hour. Also I can get a lot more food in my BS then I ever could in my old Mecco water smoker. So that is something else to consider.

Of course there IS the extra cost of adult beverages and one's "time" keeping a "constant" watch on the smoke progression.  ;D :D

The first smoke is the most expensive...(in my case) OBS - $299.99, 3 boxes of bisquettes - $53.97, shipping - $30.00 (estimated), and meat $10.00 (another estimate) for a total of $393.96.  The past few have been reasonable...meat price only.  Gonna have to break down for another costly one again (Only have 12 hours of smoke left before I need more bisquettes...but I'm only gonna be paying dealer net on them...and maybe shipping, but if I order 'em with a smoker for somebody else, that's minimal.

;D ;D ;D :P

Smokin stu,

This is a trick question. It actually does not cost you money to run the BS, you actually save money.

See, if you are in California like me, you probably need therapy. Now, instead of seeing the shrink at $75/hour on Friday, I spend happy hour at about $10/hour. Same is true for the weekend smokes; I could be doing stress reduction activities at the health club for $300/month, but have decided to forego that for spending $200/month on the BS. I am saving $100/month and feel much better.    :D :D :D

So what you are saying Arcs is the meal is free.  It is just discounted therapy.  There should be a tax break in there somewhere I am sure.  Medical psycho therapy, and the forum is extended group therapy with positive reinforcement feedback.   ::)

Dang, Stu...some questions just aren't asked. That's one of them....others are:

What's the true cost of "free" fish?
What's the true cost of "free" venison, buffalo, caribou, moose, etc?
;) ;D ;D

AnS, I like your thinking.....

Kummock, if I priced out how much the wild meat costs it would take some of the fun out of it.  I have spent much time and money watching turkeys from afar.

If I ever get asked that again, I'll just tell them that its too expensive if I have to feed them smoked meat and point to a salad that they can eat instead, and watch what happens.

Word of advice on that Smokin Stu...... don't stand in the line between them and the smoked food when you point.  Be in the line between them and the salad.   :o :o
