I am new to this type of smoker. I started out at 9am. Things were fine until about 1pm. The gfi in my garage tripped and would not allow me to plug my smoker back in without tripping. The fuse is OK. Anyone else had this problem?

Try running a professional extension cord to another outlet and see if that happens. I have never had that issue but I hate the gfi outlets.

Can I assume you have a true GFI circut? Ooops, no I can't because the wonderful builder of my house simply put a GFI outlet on the same circut with a bunch of regular outlets.
You probably have too much peak draw with whatever is plugged into other outlets on the circut. Unplug the others or do as BigRed said.
