Title: Just an update...
Post by: brderj on August 23, 2007, 03:36:28 PM
Hey all, I'm back home now...unpacked my apartment (mostly) and got to the smoker...set it up and let 'er rip for the seasoning.  My first impression is, um, WOW.  I have gone through 3 different smokers in my time and NOTHING has been this easy...turn it on, load it up, let 'er go.  No getting up and checking it every hour.  I know..I know..we have been through this time and time again, but actually DOING it is way different then reading others do it.  Soooo...

Picked up a 9lb pork shoulder and I am going to throw it in there here shortly so I can have pulled pork by lunch tomorrow.  Going to do the FTC thing when its done...see how that sets me up.  Cant wait guys...thanks for all the help along the way.  If you smell smoke at 0200 thats me...come on in for a cold brew  ;D

Hey all, thanks!!  Well the smoker is great, and thanks to you help with finding a great thermometer I was able to go to sleep and put that unit right next to my bed...when the pork hit 190 (at 0500, a little ahead of schedule!!!) it woke me up and I pulled it out of the smoker.  Thankfully I thought this might happen so I had a towel and foil out waiting.  I have no cooler, if I do (name one military guy who DOESN'T have a cooler...honestly) I cant find it in this mess I call a home.  So instead I put a cup of water in the microwave and nuked it for about 1 min. (to get the microwave a little warmer than room temp) took the water out, shut the microwave off, and put the shoulder in there.  Still haven't pulled it yet, will do as soon as I get caught up on my morning.  Pictures to follow, looks really good.  Probably the best looking shoulder I have made.  Thanks for all the help along the way guys...it has paid off for this moment.  Really do appreciate the help.

Jay

Good morning, welcome home, and thank you for serving.

Hope your meal of pork is as good as you have been anticipating.....as well as the rest of the adventures you embark on with the smoker.

We had a guy that would bring us lamb, whole legs or chopped up.  We had a bbq out there, nothing fancy, just welded 50 gallon drums, you know...  I would cook that up most of the time.  Because I'm a dog handler we have Army Vets that are with us for the dogs, the other thing they do besides animal care is food inspections, so we would always get fresh vegitables, garlic and such from the chow hall when the vet went in there to do inspections.  So we could get the stuff we needed...but there is a point when its way to hot to bbq  ;D

By the way...the shoulder is amazingly good.   ;D ;D

Awesome! Love lamb, especially the way the Syrians do it. Barbecue I mean.
Pulled pork shoulder's my favorite. Enjoy! Again, nice to have you back, Jay. ;D ;D

I was in the middle of replying when my computer had a Microsoft Moment.  I hope I didn't post an incomplete message.  If so, sorry.

I was congratulating you on your safe return and hope the rest of your unit comes home safely also.  I'm an old veteran of scenic Southeast Asia and I remember how hard it was being away from home, especially during the exciting times.  Of course, we didn't have grills, but the stuff in the green cans smelled a little smoky every now and then.

In case you get homesick for south Asia, couldn't you aim a shop fan at your smoker and have one of your buddies throw sand into it to give you the sand storm experience again?  Just wondering.

Anyway, welcome home and happy smoking.

lol....we lack the proper scary and nasty bugs as well....I need to be shot at at least 150 times during the bbq....1 big explosion hard enough to knock everything over that you spend 2 hours setting up...3 ugly girls...45 stupid men.  That would make me feel more at "home"   ;D ;D ;D
