Title: New ThermoWorks Product
Post by: Mr Walleye on March 06, 2008, 06:42:21 PM
There are a number of members here that have the Thermapen by ThermoWorks and I understand they are very accurate and very fast. My understanding is they will read in as little as 4 seconds.

While surfing through their site I can across the MTC Mini Handheld Thermocouple. It's priced at $39 but you do have to add a thermocouple to it. The advantage is you can add a wide variety of different thermocouples. I thought the Miniature Needle Probe for $42 would be a goof choice, small diameter, 39 inch wire, and a 3 second read time. Not a bad deal considering it ends up just a little cheaper than a Thermapen. It also has a magnetic back on it as well. It wouldn't be quite as portable as the Thermapen but I think it would be handier for checking sausage temps, etc.

Here is a link

Let me know what your thoughts are.

Nice link The fast response meat probe with 1.35" longer probe and $12 less might be another good choice. Just thinking and wishing Thanks for the link.

Nice find Mike,
I have the thermopen and love it.
This looks like a nice set of options and less money than the Thermopen with interchangable probes.  Looks like they made a nice upgrade choice.

For some reason that site would not open, but it sound like the one that Iceman bought some time ago, and he loved it. Every since I've been thinking of upgrading mine.

Try just going to their site and do a search on "MTC". It should come up. The link I posted works for me, I'm not sure why it wouldn't work.

I got the Model 211-008 plug mount and use the 113-159 fast response probe.
Great set up and the 211-008 can be used for the other probes I have.
I highly recomend this set up.

Thanks Ice

The reason I thought I would go with the MTC is because it can be attached to the smoker with the magnet and if I purchase the 113-181 probe it would be an ideal setup for checking sausage, or anything else for that matter. I also thought having the 39 inch probe length would be handy as well. With a read time of 3 seconds it's pretty impresive. It also has a resolution of .1 degrees F which is equivalent to the "High Accuracy Super-Fast Thermapens".

I just ordered one. Like I said I wanted something a little quicker for sausage. If it works as well as it indicates and as well as a Thermopen I will be a happy camper!  ;)

Just got the MTC in tonights mail along with the 113-182 mini probe and the 303-745 burger probe.
Tried it and compared with the 113-159 probe and against the 211. Within 1 degree all around so it's a good deal as far as I'm concerned.
For the price you can't beat it or the service they gave me. Got it in three days. Up here that's unheard of!!!
MTC and the 113-159 probe are a very good combo. Has my seal of approval  ;) ;D

She's kept me for 34 years so looks like she will hang around a while longer.  Received my MTC yesterday.   Opened the box and on top was a package of jelly belly jelly beans along with the MTC and probe.  A little something extra, how cool is that?

Do you guys use this in place of using the, lets say the Maverick ET-73? And if so, what do you do, put two probes into the box, one into your meat and one to monitor the temp in the smoker? Remember, I'm new to this. Thanks

Hi Kurt

I use the new MTC more for checking internal temps of things like sausage. The Thermocoupler that I bought is a very small diameter and is excellent for this. I still use the ET73 for monitoring the smoker temp and other meats such as butts. I don't think I would ever want to be without my ET73 unless something better comes along but to date nothing has.

I'm with the Walleye on this one.  The Maverick ET-73 is still my source in the smoker.  I use the MTC to spot check temps of meats, etc.  Did a pastrami today, ET said 159.  The MTC probe gave me a couple different temps depending on where I checked.

Besides, it's another great toy huh LQ?  ;)
