Up until lately we have been fighting fruit rats. The other day I notice that the rats outside seem to be gone. Then two days back I found out why.
We have a pair of the nicest Adult Yellow Rat Snakes here I've seen in years. I knew we had 3 or 4 nice black snakes out in the garden but the Rat Snakes took me back. They eat much-o rodents. You should see them climb one of our palms. Now I know why there are no more fruit rats up in the top of that palm tree.
Here is a image of what they look like.

Of course they scare the tar out of Susan. They are HARMLESS (non-venomous,) but that does not make any difference to her.

Nice reptile!
We have a few black racers and a corn snake. no pics.
Summer is here...I'll try and get a pic of our bullsnakes...and now and again we do get a rattler, both kinda scary (well of course the rattler) usually about 3-4 feet and angry! Good shotgun takes care of it, but bulls are soooo, good for mice, rats down in the barn...but, ok I don't like snakes, spiders and scorpions!
Thanks Olds! :o

Bullsnakes ;D
My mom would tell you about the story of me as a little shaver that was encouraged to stop catching butterflies and get catapillers to watch them turn into a butterfly.
Yup, got me one of them there big catapillers for a big butterfly. Just didn't know why mom and my sister screamed so loud when I brought my catpiller into the house.
Turned out to be a baby bullsnake.
It looks similar to the Garter snakes (sometimes called Garden snakes) that live in my area. I wonder if they are from the same species? The Garter snake eats a lot of insects and rodents.
Snakes are great pest-control. We've got a huge black rat snake living under our shed (no picture) and we ran into this beautiful red-rat snake on Hilton Head Island: http://www.flickr.com/photos/raisingale/2490017682/ (http://www.flickr.com/photos/raisingale/2490017682/)
This beauty was almost stepped on in North Georgia, thank God it wasn't! : http://www.flickr.com/photos/raisingale/2300065109/ (http://www.flickr.com/photos/raisingale/2300065109/)
When i lived in the mojave dessert of S. Calif i used to catch mojave green rattlers :o
Cut em up, soak the pieces in a mix of water, salt, chili powder for 24 hrs. takes the snakey taste out ;D
Fry the snake pieces in some lard and toss em into the chili mmmmmm mmmmmmm good.

I think you're mistaken aces, I'm almost positive I saw one in court the other day in Anchorage. Pretty sure it was called a lawyer (as in ex wife). :o ;D
Sorry, I don't mean any disrespect to the profession but some of them don't have a bit of remorse for the grief they cause people.

Olds,
What part of the state are you in?? I live in Palm Beach, so we don't get much of it on the east end. My parents live in Sebring, looks like it may be more of that area???
