Title: LilSmoker, Wildcat, Tenpoint5, Smoking Duck, westexasmoker, Smokin Soon -- Spam
Post by: Oldman on November 22, 2008, 07:43:24 AM
I enjoyed your confessions on the thread that LilSmoker started about Spam. When I was younger at home we had many types of Spam meals.

I read this today in our local Newpaper about Spam. Thought it might be interesting to share it as well.

Great story, Olds.  Maybe some economic turndown will help in the way of reliving old memories.  It seems the faster this old world gets, the more we forget the good old days.  Remember when people used to live off the land?  If we ever had to go to those days again, the population would probably see a downturn of about 75% because most couldn't take care of themselves and live off the land.  The old adage of teaching a man to fish seems really relevant right now............ :'(

I really enjoyed reading that Raye, thanks for sharing  ;)

I have lots of fond memories of spam from when i was a kid, yeah i actually like the stuff!  ;D but then there's not much that i won't eat anyway  ;D

I remember having spam with mashed potatoes, pickles etc, and at school dinners we used to have spam fritters with chips (fries) or even the Monty Python "spam egg chips and spam"  ;D

I have also had good success using spam as bait when carp fishing!  :o

Long live the Spam i say (http://i149.photobucket.com/albums/s62/Gitster59/Tip-Hat.gif)

Thanks for the post Olds.  Nothing like hard times to get people heading down the frugal path.  I have always liked spam, but did get a little burned out once during my teen years.  Have not had any in about 3 years now so I think it is time to pick up a can again along with some spicey mustard.

Great article Olds. I proudly stand and say " I AM A SPAM SURVIVOR AND I STILL ENJOY EATING SPAM!" It really is good eating it like a fattie.

QuoteRemember when people used to live off the land?
Man do I ever...

I remember:

1. Stealing Pecans to sell for grits and butter
2. When 24 or so 2 cent soda pop bottles pick up on the side of the road got me 100 177 cal pellets for my air gun:

3. How proud Mother was when I got a couple of squirrels or a rabbit with that pellet gun.
4. How I felt guilty when I got Robins and ate their breast..

because I never got enough to share with my brother and sister...
5. How we hated the weekends because there was no free school lunch on Sat / Sun.

Good Ole times, for me,  are only a figment of my aging imagination / memory.

Long Live SPAM! It was our  Sunday treat and Mother had a hundred ways of fitin' it.

I remember the days when spam was a splurge...otherwise raman noodles or ranch style beans with some bread!

I told the wife that maybe what we should do is get up in some mountains, build a cabin, homeschool the kids and live off of the land.  She told me I need to find a new wife.  I told her at 32, she was getting to that "trade her in" age anyways and that might not be a bad idea.

I didn't sleep much that night  :-X :o

I remember those days as well Olds.  Grew up on a small farm (without tractors).  Dad was a truck driver and my five siblings and I worked long hot hard days to grow the veggies mom would can/freeze to get us through the winter, slopped the hogs, tended the chickens, and the single cow we had.  I then had to cut tons of firewood through the winter.  Squeezed in some fishing, swimming and hunting when I could.  I would not trade those days for anything, but have no desire to do it again either.

Man I hear that.

I guess a lot of us have much in common. Perhaps this is one reason I like the folks here so much...even the one "young" Lady here that at the moment is ticked off with me.  ;)
Quoteslopped the hogs
By the time I was in the 9th - 10th grade we were getting piglets in the spring and raised them until fall. The problem was my baby sister looked upon them as pets. My brother and myself? Well we looked upon them as walking bacon!  ;D ;D ;D

Take about eating off of the land, last weekend I went to this "secret" place I know and started turning over large pieces of cement that are in salt water. Under them MUCH-O Stone Crabs. Unlike many folks I only take one claw and leave the crab to live. "He" will be there next year... shhh it is a secret!
