Title: Some of you already know this, but...
Post by: Tiny Tim on December 23, 2008, 02:31:17 PM
Sunday night I put Dad in the hospital.  Both of us have been fighting sores on our legs for 2+ years, and that was his main issue, however on Saturday night, he really wasn't himself, sort of like he was having a diabetic reaction (my sister was a diabetic so I know some of the signs) or had experienced a stroke at some time.  I kept threatening to take him in, but he always had a competent answer for me when I asked some questions.

Sunday afternoon we were watching a little football when he suggested that I take him to ER to get checked out.  A few hours later he was being transferred to a larger hospital for better treatment and care.

Started to head up there last night to visit after work, but it was snowing and blowing pretty good, so I turned around and called him instead.  Sounded really good at the time, but they were getting ready to take him in for a CT scan.  No word on results yet.

If you're into that kind of thing, we'd appreciate some prayers and kind thoughts.  I'm sure he'll come out okay, I'm just sorta stressed out right now.

Thank you everybody...ya'll almost made me cry with the outpouring of support.  Finally going up to see him when I get out of the store today.  Gotta wait for the Fed Ex truck, then it's my call when to close up.

My aunt and cousin went up yesterday and they say he looked really good and seemed to be in really good spirits, the only thing they were concerned about is that he was really weak.  Could be from medication, laying around for 2-3 days, or just lack of exercise over the past 6-8 months since he'd broken his shoulder and began staying home in his recliner a lot instead of golfing, yardwork, etc.

Thanks again

Tim

Best wishes Tiny. I know what you are going through, my dad just got out of the hospital they had to take off his big toe and the whole joint below it. Now hes in a wheelchair for 4-6 weeks. He stepped on something and the infection got really bad and this is the end result. You and your dad take care.

Once again, thank you for the support....you're the most amazing group that I've ever had the privilege to socialize with.

Left at about 2:00 on Wednesday and arrived at the hospital at about 3:45 (stopped for an Arby's lunch).  Got to his room and saw his girlfriend's daughter-in-law (GF-DIL) and granddaughter there.  I'm a bit on the large side, so the chairs that were in the room weren't going to work for me, and the staff didn't know of any others, so the GF-DIL offered to get me one from her house, that she knew I liked.

They didn't stick around too long after dropping the chair off, so Dad and I just talked for quite a while...until about 9:30 when I went to find a hotel room for the night.  Came back at about 11:00 Christmas Morning and he was sleeping, so I opened a bottle of pop as quietly as I could and sat there for a while.  Phone rang about 15 minutes after I got there and he didn't hear it, so I mentioned it and woke him up enough to answer the phone.  Visited for a while and about 2:00 both of us took a nap...just because we both fell asleep.  Left about 4:30 or 5:00 to get home at a reasonable time.

He's comfortable there, and seems to be happy to be there.  He's more like the person I went to some winery's with in late spring/early summer, than the guy I've been living with the past month or two.....so that's good.  He thinks they'll kick him out of there Sunday, but I would guess Tuesday to Thursday at the earliest.

Tiny,

Glad to hear your Dad is starting to come around....hopefully, he can get back to where he was in no time.

Kudos to you for spending your Christmas at his side........I believe you've shown the true measure of a selfless person.  Sounds like you and your Dad have a great relationship and that is priceless, IMHO.

TT,  sorry about just noticing this thread.  Don't ever hesitate to ask for prayers and support.  A lot of us have been there and know what you might be going through and know the power of praying people.  My prayers go out for you, your dad, the family, and to his caregivers.  As SD said so well, the relationship you have with your Dad is indeed priceless - guard it and enjoy it.   Man, I wish mine wasn't 996 miles away!  I'd like to give him a big hug.

Update on Dad.  I brought him home on New Year's Eve, and he commenced to wearing me out asking for this and that and helping him do this or that.  While being discharged from the hospital, we were instructed to go to the nearest hospital (the one that transferred him to the one he stayed in) for IV Antibiotics, daily for 2 weeks.  He can walk fine, but his legs are weak enough that he can't climb into my truck (Dodge 4x4), and we end up growling at each other because I'm about as useless as Apple Bisquettes at WTS's place, at helping him in.

Anyway, we got that done Thursday and Friday, took Saturday off due to freezing rain and slickness, then on Sunday they let us drive into the ambulance bay at the hospital and did the IV out there with hime sitting in the pickup.  Yesterday we did it the same way, and an old friend of his who is a nurse was there to talk to us.  She convinced him that he should re-admit himself to that hospital to do a better job with the wound care on his leg, be more convenient for the IV, and to get some physical therapy so his legs and the shoulder he broke this summer could get stronger, so we're going to do that in about an hour from now.

I'm glad he's out of the City hospital, but also glad he's going back into the local one because it is just plain too much work for this overweight out of shape guy to take care of him, and now he'll be a lot closer so I can visit nightly if I so choose (more often than not, probably).

Thank you again for your continued thoughts, prayers, and inquiries into how he is doing.  I think it all is really helping.

Also, I apologize for not telling you all when I brought him home...was home for an extra day after that and by the time I got back to the computer, it seemed like old news.

Thanks for the update, Tiny.  It's never old news where the concern is about a loved one.  I think I speak for the group when I say that we all would like the updates.  I kinda feel when one goes through something, we all go through it.  Hopefully, this latest move to the local hospital will benefit all (you need to take care of yourself as well while helping Dad).

By the way, that comment "useless as apple bisquettes at WTS' place" was a classic.  I'm still wiping a tear away from that one!

I'm with SD about the apple bisquette and WTS comment - classic!

Really glad to hear that you all are taking the advice of your friend,  Wound care is a tricky and delicate business at times.  Having them get a good leg up on the care before he comes home is a wise move.  Plus the PT is a good move also, if anything just to give you and him some idea of exercises to help get him back to where he was.

The picture of your Dodge 4x4 with an IV bottle, and stand next to it with the tubes running into the passenger side would have been a sight to behold.  Dodge might have bought that for marketing - Dodge Trucks - accepted at hospitals everywhere!

Even though tardy, prayers are with you my friend....Parents are precious (even though thicker skulled than their children ;)) Lost my dad a while back and best advice I could give is to squeeze out every moment with them (whether they like it or not! ;) )  Pleased to hear that you are graced with more Dad time!

Thank you everybody.  Dad seems to be a lot better at home this time, and better news yet is that I won't have to wrap him any more as he'll be going in to have that done when it needs it (3 times a week).  The only thing it seems he can't do is get himself out of his chair, and that problem is being taken care of by getting a lift chair....could be here this weekend.

Tim,

Sorry for not viewing this earlier.  So glad to hear that your Dad is doing well, and is in your company and care.  No one can comfort like family.

Gotta agree with the others, "More useless than apple bisquette's at WTS's" was definitely one of the better lines that I've seen here in my short time.  It got a good belly laugh from me.

Hope things continue to go well.  From your posts, your Dad is very lucky to have you.  Keep up the good work, and God Bless.

Jeff
