Has anyone ever purchased spice bottles (plastic) online and if so, any decent places to purchase? I've found some via google, but most charge an inordinate amount for shipping or some will add a $15 small order surcharge. Was hoping someone might have a place that I might have missed.
Thanks!
SD
Check with San Francisco Herb, I noticed they had the 8 oz and 16 oz. the other day browsing their catalogue. Their shipping is usually ok, but we haven't ordered in a year or two and it is usually 50 lbs or more.

I'd like that information too, SD. I think I saw it some months ago in here but can't remember where.
SD, sodak, try atlanticspice.com, penzey's and spice barn will be high, or that spice supplier on ebay.

I really like these, very cheap and come with sprinkle top and cap.

That's the photo I remember Smokin' Soon! Thanks for the information!
Thanks, SS! Those seem to be a very decent price. They also had some other good items (I got some wine bottles to use for barbecue sauce) very inexpensively as well.
I must say that I am impressed with their customer service as well, SS. I placed a small order as I'm going to try and put together a rub for sale locally and I also ordered a couple of bigger jars to put bulk spices in. When I placed the order, the shipping came to $11 and some change. They were kind enough to call me and let me know because of the bulk of the items, the shipping was going to be about $10 more. Instead of losing me as a customer, because at that price, I could have gotten locally, she knowcked $5 off of the shipping to keep my business. Very pleasant to deal with.

Duck, they are really good people there and have good customer service. Allthough their products are geared towards soap and perfume products, you cannot beat the prices. I bought a couple of 24 count cases
of those bottles to give friends my ground rub blends and some of my BBQ sauce blends.
Hi SD,
It's funny because I was watching Good Eats this evening on the Food network and they were recommending small tins for storing spices. And that they said were available at most craft stores.
Also, I've seen them at Penzeys. www.penzeys.com
Carolyn
Hi Carolyn,
I did find what I was looking for. Did they recommend tins for a specific reason? I should have the spice jars arriving today.
Marc
SD, I read somewhere one of the reasons for using tins is to block out light. Don't know how true this is, I'm just sayin'.....
Well, that's what I was thinking. However, I would think one could get a better seal with the plastic versus the tin? Maybe it's a trade off?
SD, I don't know why they recommended them. ??? I was cooking dinner for the family at the time and probably missed it.
I agree with you about the sealing of plastic as opposed to a metal. I'll go the show's web site and see what I can find.
But they did look pretty neat! The whole show was about buying spices and grinding them, etc. You probably would have enjoyed it, too.
One thing I did catch was to store whole spices up to 2 years and ground spiced no more than 6 months. I use spices in some cases pretty quickly but I do not think I could afford to purge and replace my spices every 6 mos.
Carolyn
Here is another place to pick up spice containers etc. I have not purchased from them but was told by a friend that he buys from them.

SD, I couldn't find any info about why metal would be better. The episode of Good Eats was called Spice Capades, that's all I was able to find out from the show's website ::)
Carolyn
I wish I could have seen it. Spice is the variety of life, after all ;D
I believe AB hangs magnetic tape to his cabinet doors and then stores the tins on it.
HCT, did you catch why he recommended the tins?
Carolyn
Carolyn, just that it blocks out the light and the convenience of hanging them on the cabinet doors to free up space. To me it's overly expensive plus I would need a ton of cabinet doors. :D :D :D
He uses Velcro to secure them to the inside of the cabinet doors. As for using the metal containers, I believe it's mostly for the light blocking, but those kind of containers create a pretty good seal too.

Me either. I buy bulk and keep in freezer sealed up. Seems to hold for a lot more than 6 mos!

That's it TT, Velcro. I don't know where I got magnets from. :D :D
Oh, the light blocking qualities of something opaque!
I forgot! :D
I just wonder about how air-tight they would be. Maybe lay some plastic over the top before screwing them shut?
I'm with you HCT, I barely have the cabinet space to be hanging things on the inside of the doors. But it is a good idea...in theory.
I do what you do Caneyscud because I buy bulk bags from Penzeys for a lot of my spices and just keep a small amount in my cabinet.
Carolyn
SD you might also check with spice barn
Thanks Beefman! Already hooked up with some.
