Title: Homemade Smokers - HELP!!
Post by: jlearsi67 on March 07, 2005, 05:55:17 PM
I am looking to make my own smoke house out of an old high school locker. I've got big plans for it, but was wondering if there were any issues with your typical painted high school steel locker being used in this way. Any info would be greatly appreciated.  Thanks,

Jay

Jay,

Do a search on either "tin" or "zinc". There was a pretty long thread discussing the metal issues when someone wanted to make a smoker out of a barrel, I believe.

Do you plan to insulate it?

Ya think next time I check into a hotel & they ask "Smoking or Non?" they would mind?

I have had good luck with a old fridge as a smoking chamber . The things the fridge has going for it are they are insulated they have racks they have a good door with a good latch and are not too find . Get a old one they were meatal lined . They had rounded top and a small freezer compartment. Take it some place and have the gas pumped out . Srip out the fridge parts and you have a great smoking chamber .
.Good luck and all the best Tim

Jay,

if you are planning on using the locker as a smoker i would advise you in sand blasting or just plain sanding the paint on the interior of the locker so you would eliminate any contaminants from getting into your food. Make sure you wash it all out than dry it out to prevent any rusting, then use the generator with adaptor to season the locker and BOOM!!! There you have a brand new custom made Bradley Smoker.

Enjoy.

Wken I need something cleaned like that I take it to the local machine shop that has a hot tank for engines/transmissions. Have them put in the tank for a few days everything gets removed down to bare metal. Maybe even a radiator shop has one.[8D]

I thought you were going to stop refering to yourself as God.
I also find it offensive.
