Title: Javelina Hunt
Post by: KevinG on February 14, 2010, 12:16:22 PM
Boy I gotta tell you, I am miserable at this sport. I have looked high, looked low, walked washes, desert, and mountain tops, I've searched valleys, streams, and water tanks. Been out before first light and stayed out till dark. Used binoculars, tried calling, tried sitting, walking, scoping, etc. I cannot for the life of me find these darn little pig wannabes. Hunting season starts the end of this week. Has anybody got any advice on how to get a javelina, before I waste an entire week doing the same crap I've already tried unsuccessfully?

Can you throw corn out?

Something I do for Feral Hogs is take a spade shove and dig a whole as deep as you can

and put some corn in the whole sprinkle some cherry koolaid on the corn, then more corn, etc, etc

fill up the whole. Feral hogs love it.

Also a product called Hogs gone wild.

I"ll have to double check the regs when I get home, but that sounds like a good idea.

Had to Google that beast...
Evidently, you can sniff 'em out..

Peccaries have scent glands below each eye and another on their back, though these are believed to be rudimentary in Pecari maximus. They use the scent to mark herd territories, which range from 75 to 700 acres (2.8 km2). They also mark other herd members with these scent glands by rubbing one against another. The pungent odor allows peccaries to recognize other members of the herd, despite their myopic vision. The odor is strong enough to be picked up by humans, which earns the peccary the nickname of skunk pig.

That is a definite option, as long as my allergies don't kick in, but so far I haven't even smelled anything abnormal yet either. I'm about to pull what's left of my hair out trying to find these buggers.

They also tend to run in herds...  Know anyone with a Cessna?

That would be nice, but that one is definitely a no no according to game & fish. I did however not see anything in there about baiting, so I might get lucky if they like corn like CRG suggested.

I was wrong about the name of the Hog Bait.

It's not "Hogs Gone Wild". Got that confused with the DVD they sell on TV.

("Girls Gone Wild") ;D Kinda the same thing just different animals.

It's Called "Hog Wild"

Also, if it is dry there, might try to stay in an area where water is at.

If you have water in ditches and puddles in roads, then that might be no good.

;D :D ;D Don't want to get those mixed up in the bedroom. It might not make the wife too happy. It's still a little wet out here from the rains a couple of weeks ago. They dumped pretty hard on us, so there's still plenty of puddles.

I haven't heard of that, but I do know they live all the way down in South America, they're pretty recent here in the U.S., only a couple hundred years.

You know if you shoot one you have to take the meat.

If not you can get fined for wasted resources.

My friend that works on a west Texas ranch calls them rodent pigs.

Kevin,

I have a friend that hunts them here in New Mexico. He spent the whole week hunting them and never seen a thing. On his last day he was sitting in the car having lunch and had decided to head back home. He had a couple of sandwiches he had not eaten and threw them out the window to get rid of them. He decided to take a short nap before the long drive home. He said he had dozed for maybe 10 minutes when he awoke and looked around. He said here was a herd of about twenty of them fighting over the old sanwiches he threw out! He was able to shoot two of them.

CRG's hole with corn is similar to a method that works for me.  Fill a five gallon bucket with maize milo and water.  Put a lid on it.  Let it get smelly (about a week in the summer).  Put that in a hole or under six inches of soil over a 10 x 10 area.

PIGS!!!!

Or just throw out some old sandwiches.

Good luck and clean shots,

Pachanga

For our Hog Traps we soak our corn in Diesel to keep the deer out.

But a Hog will eat diesel soaked corn.

Kevin, just because it's not there (baiting in the regs) don't mean it isn't illegal.  AZ has some funny hunting regs.  Found that out when I was at Ft Huachuca before moving back up to the midwest.  When in doubt, call your Game Warden's office and ask.  They are the authority, as well as the ones to give the ticket if you do something wrong.

That's the "good life" for you.

As a Hunter Ed instructor, I didn't want you going out with bad info.  Glad you researched AZ's regs and called the Game Wardens.  Don't trust the store clerks sellilng hunting licenses either, they are not trained in the game laws, just how to fill out your license (and some can't do that very well either....    ;D  ) .

I deer hunt on a working farm in north Texas and they're considered pests...no season, no regulations, no limits.

We usually wait till about 2 in the morning and then corral 'em with the truck and spotlight and pick them off one by one.

Most we ever got in one night was 14.  Not very good eatin', but the coyotes love 'em!

Well it turns out I didn't need the bait after all. I finally bagged my first Javelina. I really didn't think it was going to happen this year. Went out scouting 5 times and didn't see anything until the last scouting trip which I thought I saw about 8 laying down, but never could tell for sure. The day started off with me waking up late, I packed the last few things in the truck and headed out. I made it before dark still and took a little nap. Once the other hunters starting showing up, I decided it would probably be wise to watch where they go, and hopefully one of them will know what they're doing. Well, they didn't, I went near a couple of groups and parked, but didn't set up camp. I got out and started walking and climbed a mountain to scout, nothing but a couple of mule deer, it was pretty cool though cause I caught them just before they bedded down. It's amazing how they disappear. Decided to move close to a wash on the other side about 10 miles away. It was about noon, so I figured I'd eat and set up camp, since it didn't look like I would get one today. After that I headed out down the wash, then climbed a couple of mountains and scope. I started getting tired, and started walking slow, and looking, and walking slow and looking, etc. etc. until I started to get a whiff of something occasionally. I didn't see anything and then the smell went away, but every time I moved I'd get another whiff, I thought I might be sweating pretty hard from the climb so I ignored it. Next thing I know, I hear what sounds like a horse walking slowly up behind me. I didn't want to turn and scare whatever it was, so I kinda of just nudged my head and cranked my eyeballs. I couldn't believe it, a Javelina was right behind me not more than 3 yards. He kept sniffing and walk a little, then sniff and walk a little. I was freaking out, how the heck can I turn and shoot him. Finally I just decided to do it, I got off a bad shot cause he was so close and hit him high. He ran but I hit him in the spine so he was dragging his feet. I shot again and again all going too darn high, finally I hit him again. He stopped, but wouldn't give up. He finally went down. I started to move close to grab him and he turned and jumped at me, snapping his teeth. I must have jumped back a mile. By this time I ran out of bullets on my 30-06, but I still had my hand gun. I hit him again perfectly, but he still wouldn't die. What the heck! I decided to wait him out, and he finally expired. I dragged him out of the bush and started cleaning him. As soon as I got near his nuggets, he kicked his legs and I jumped about 3 feet. I finally finished and was going to mark the spot with my GPS, but it died on me. Oh well, then I had the fun of trying to carry the 40 pound beast back to the truck which at this point was over a mile and a half. Not an easy task carrying the pig, rifle, fanny pack, and not sure where you're going. I ended up setting the pig down about 2 or 3 times and looking ahead to find the truck. I finally made it! Woo Hoo! Boy those things sure stink to high heaven. It smells like really bad B O. I got home and took a shower, and it still smells on me. I'm hoping I didn't screw the pelt up too bad, cause I want to get him mounted.

Hunting in Arizona smoketail. This is my second year trying, I really think I got lucky with this one.

CRG - you got that right. If it weren't for him I'd still be out there. I must have looked his direction 5 times and didn't see anything. Where do those things come from? I still can't get over how close he was to me and didn't even realize I was standing right in front of him. They got it right when they say Javelina can't see to good.

6 shooter would've added too much unnecessary weight. I was thinking of going out with just my 6 shooter, but I never expected to get that close, since I didn't see anything during the scouting trips, except for maybe that last day.

In case you wanted to see it, here's my Euro Mount. I did this myself, and have the rest at the taxidermist. It should be back in about 6 months. One thing that's pretty cool is that as of right now it is a record book mount. Unfortunately I have to wait 60 days for final approval (dry time). Hopefully it won't shrink too much and stay as a record!

and you use every bit of ammo you had bringing down the dazed and confussed

pig rodent, and you get your name in the record books?!

CONGRADULATIONS! Only record I ever had was a Elvis Presley Album.

Well, within two months I'll be getting that critter back. I figured I'd better stock up on ammo just in case he's still kicking. Think I've got enough?

he musta thought you were his daddy. Did you take a shower before you went? Congrats. I know how you feel hiking and carrying game. have hunted turkeys in S.D. carrying shot gun blind and decoys then throwing a 22 lbs turkey on top and climbing hills. Think I'm getting to old!

Ok folks, the time has come. The taxidermist finally opened the door and let the pig out. He tried to get away, but I tracked him down.

The first thing I did when I got him home was to shine a light through the back of him just to see how many holes there really was.

I set him on the ground, and the oinker wasn't too appreciative of that little episode.

I decided to get him up on the wall before I get hurt.....too late.

Here he is with a little fight still left in him.
