Title: Gardening Container Contest
Post by: Oldman on April 04, 2010, 07:42:58 AM
As many here know I make my own growth containers. Now I'm not the best craftsman in the world but my containers work. I use only food grade plastic containers.

From the article I write for our newsletter I have receive some nice E-mails. So I thought why not make  a growth container and put it up as a contest prize. If every few years a new clear coat of sealer is applied to it then the winners grandchildren's grandchildren will be able to grow their first plant in it.

On the underside of the container I will place the winner's initials and the date 2010. This way if the container is maintained as the generations of your family pass they all will know where the container came from.

This container is somewhat larger than the one in the newsletter. Below is an image of one next to the first one I showed.  The one in this image (one on the left)  is going to my Grandaughter.

Contest is through the month of April, 2010. Rules are simple. The closes person to the contest number wins the container. I will also include some of my enhanced compost to be mixed in your potting soil.

The spread on the numbers is 1 to 1000. All who hit the number or tie will receive a container. This contest is open to all; with no limitations as to where in the world you live.

Good Luck!

Just a line concerning this next container. This one I do believe will be the best container I've ever made. Normally I use square box type containers so the one I posted in the image was my first using a 5 gallon pickle container. This one is going to be a sweet growth container. (BTW by the end of summer I will have 30 of these types of containers.)

EDIT: I'm also do a much better step by step how to make your own and I will use it to replace my first step by step that is listed on the recipe site. I learned a lot when I made the first one.

Contest ends tomarrow.

BTW I gave the bucket and plant to my Operations Manager's wife. It has so many tomatoes on it that they have had to stake up the container.  ;D

Very cool Raye. I will pass though as it would cost to much to ship it here. I was looking at those topsy turvy bags they look cool but who knows if the are good.

Build your own... it seems from what I'm told by a couple of my employees that the store purchased units do not hold up. Not this next newsletter but in June I will show you how it is done. Mine are grow stuff crazy like. I will explain the how and why I do it as I do in that news letter.

Enter the contest... shipping is worldwide.

I used the coconut lined hanging baskets.  They look much better than the plastic topsy turvy bags.  The only concern I have is the depth of the soil is not as great as the topsy turvy bags.

I cut an X in the bottom and passed the tomato root ball through the X.  I planted marigolds in the top to help fend off insects.  I also planted some string beans as they are suppose to product nitrogen in the soil that is suppose to help the tomatoes grow.

Now if only olds lived next door so I could get some of that great compost he makes.   :)
