Title: (a not so)Red Velvet Cake
Post by: Caribou on December 12, 2010, 09:04:06 AM
For my husband's birthday this year I cooked a Red Velvet Cake following Cakeman Raven's recipe:
http://www.foodnetwork.com/recipes/sara-moulton/southern-red-velvet-cake-recipe/index.html (http://www.foodnetwork.com/recipes/sara-moulton/southern-red-velvet-cake-recipe/index.html)

I had made this recipe once before after seeing it on Bobby Flay's Throwdown and was really happy with it.
The only thing I change on it was omitting the pecans (my hubbies request) and I just cannot bring myself to adding an entire 2oz bottle of red food coloring to it.  :D
Food coloring doesn't change the flavor, well, maybe in that amount it does. ;) Instead I added 1oz of red stuff and it still came out red enough for me.

It's a really GOOD cake and it's now our family's favorite.  I posted a few pics, too.

Thanks guys :)
I'll pass the birthday wishes on the Mr. C.
Do you think in 6 years I'll be able to reuse the "1" candle if I lean it a little to the right? ;)

Maybe that's what I'll do for a Christmas dessert.

Sounds pretty cool Carolyn might have to use the whole bottle of red to get it darker though for Christmas red

I don't think I've ever seen a green velvet cake? You may be on to something...sitting around the fire reading green eggs and ham on Christmas Eve!  ;D

I know if I did put green frosting on the red cake there would be more left over. :)
Yeah, might have to go with the full bottle on the next one because I am making one for our Christmas dinner.
I just have trouble with it because I'm from the era of the "red dye number 2 recall"
It was a long time before they started making red M&Ms again after that.
Remember?

But then again, they could be going natural and making the red dye from insects!  Yummy

Have been out of pocket and just seen this.

Cake looks delicious.

One question. Does it make your tongue red after eating it?

Hi CRG,
No it didn't dye our tongues but my kitchen looked like a crime scene after the mess I made making the cake. ;)

My blood sugar just went up 20 points looking at the pics!

And I think the red with green icing is a great idea. - I'd do one, but everyone coming for Christmas is on restricted diets.

Carolyn,

My wife loves Red velvet Cupcakes.  The little bakery she frequents closed recently without notice.  Other bakers can't seem to get this recipe right according to the wife.

I think I will surprise her with your recipe.  Thanks for the inspiration.

Yours looks great and plenty red.

I must say, I'm not a cake eater, but that cake looks GREAT!

Must be the red, like the way I like the middle of my steak.  ;D
